If I were Maneri I might wait a day or two before accepting PS shackles, on the theory that if Thomas Austin can get a gig on a 53, I sure should too!

I agree that if Austin (who was claimed by 4 teams I believe) can be on someone's 53, Maneri should.

I would have thought hanging on to Maneri would make more sense than to try and develop Welch and Kupa. He seemed to have enough talent to be worth hanging onto and could have filled in at the 3rd TE role. Of all the moves this week, Maneri and to a lesser extent Yeatman seemed to make the least sense, if only because they were prospects worth devolping.

The ship might have sailed on Maneri but if they do happen to sign him to the PS, he would still be eligible to join another teams 53 without restriction.

Just because I don't know could someone help me out with Ventrone? Is he really a player or is he the kind of guy that is valuable in a practice because of his versatility? I know he's a ST guy, but I'm unsure why we're keeping this guy around.

Must be his versatility. This article talks about factors concerning the selection of practice squads.
Understanding the NFL practice squad | National Football Post

Thanks for the link-very informative. Kind of put a focus on the reason I think that Ventrone may be on it-because he's most likely a good practice player. Much like I'm sure Buddy Farnham was and one of the reasons I thought he might end up there again (and still might).

I like Maneri, but when you have 7 active OL and 3 OTs ahead of him thats a tough spot to keep a developmental guy.
We seem to have some positions that we have overstocked, and apparently have totally loaded up on special teamers. This hasn't really been discussed but given the lockout and lack of workouts, its possible BB kept extra st guys in order to keep starters off of sts.
I think Maneri was a luxury, and there will be another Maneri down the road if we lose him.
Yeatman just didn't impress me. I thought he lacked the agility to be an NFL TE.

Andy - The Pats have had to use 4 OTs every year since BB took over.. It's interesting that they decided that Welch was a better prospect than Maneri was.

Yeah Idighbo along with both Tarpinian and White seems a little excessive for ST when Maneri could have been the 3rd TE AND 4th OT. Crumpler hasn't been signed yet and they'll be an injury away from having Welch or Kupa as 3rd OT, also Light might not be here next year, Maneri could make a good swing tackle. Mark Anderson is essentially a 5th DE, is that more important than a 4th OT?

Not the end of the world, It's one of the few moves I question.

I dont see how you conclude they decided that.
Maneri was cut from the 53. Welch was signed to the ps, before Maneri did or didn't clear waivers.
There was never a decision between the 2. Actually there was last year when Maneri stayed.

Kopa is an OT/OG. Spent last year first with the 49ers on their PS and then on Miami's active roster, though he didn't play in any games.

Silvestro and Lavarias signed to PS. No Darryl Richard

No Kettani or Farnham either. Little surprised at that too.

FWIW, Farnham wasn't on the PS at the start of the 2010 season either.

Anderson is part of the 3man rotation of Carter, Cunningham, Anderson as DEs in the nickel/dime that we play half the snaps. I'd say he is more important than a 4th OT who would be inactive.
I don't know where you get that Maneri would play TE. Why wouldn't we sign a TE instead keeping an additional OL active?

How can you say that they didn't make a decision between the two? The Pats decided to sign Welch instead of waiting a few hours to re-sign Maneri. You seem to be forgetting that Maneri couldn't have been re-signed until about 4 pm ET this afternoon.

If Maneri clears, it would be nice to see him replace Kopa.

Maneri was a TE in college not an Offensive Tackle, for the third TE whose main purpose is blocking, I'm sure he could have handled that role as well as seemingly being a better OL prospect than Welch and Kupa. Signing a new TE would require getting rid of an additional player currently on the roster.

Cutting Maneri is a bit of a surprise with Gronk the only blocking TE on the roster and Vollmer missing the game last week and practice today. Only two tackles dressed for practice.

Welch is another converted TE who also does some long-snapping. In fact, there was some speculation in the media & on this board as I remember that he might make last year's team as a snapper replacing Jake Ingram at the time. I remember reading a column (think Mike Reiss) who surmised he didn't because the team didn't think a 300 lbs snapper would be very good at covering punts.

Just a thought, but why couldn't Welch be added to the 53 man roster and be active for a game. He could take the place of the long-snapper claimed from the Bills. Welch could share the snapping duties with Rob Ninkovich. Ninkovich could snap for punts and Welch for FGs. Welch could also serve as the8th active lineman which would be handy if the team uses Solder as a 6th OL(or 3rd TE) extensively as some speculate.

I think you missed my point.
Why activate an extra OL to be the 3rd TE instead of signing a 3rd TE?
Manieri would either be inactive every game, or activated to be a TE. It would make more sense to go get a real TE.

Welch and Kupa arent on the 53 man they are on the ps.

I think there is little doubt we will be signing a 3rd TE.

Per Roto BB released Maneri... he did not waive him.
