Announced Patriots cuts: countdown to 53

Re: Announced cuts: countdown to 53

Darius has had a very good preseason.

Can you define good?

I thought Gronkowski and Hernandez had good rookie seasons.

Why everyone expects to see him cut when the Patriots have McCourty, a minorly injured Bodden and no one else...well it boggles the mind.

Arrington is better than Butler. Thats why he won the starting CB job after game 2 last season while Butler rode the bench. Butler had 2 PI calls and gave up a TD in that game.

Butler has underwhelmed since he arrived in Foxboro. Hes around because he was a high round selection and BB has to give this 3rd year failed experiment every opportunity to reap some kind of reward.

I'll put money down that Butler wont be a Patriot next year if he doesnt show something this season.

This is a bizarre post.

I'll go back to what I wrote: Butler had a good preseason. He defended well, broke up passes, made a lot of tackles. He had 2 PIs called against him, both of which were actually really good plays on his part.

As for the bet you're offering, it's a heads I win, tails you lose. You're going to bet that Butler won't be back if he shows nothing this season? Uh, yeah.

If you want to counter that by going back all the way to his bad game in the second week of last season, be my guest.

Butler did play a bit better in the preseason compared to last year in the regular season.

It's like comparing food that went bad 1 month ago to food that went bad 5 months ago. Which one is better? The one that went bad 1 month ago right? That's how Butler's play been in the preseaon: food that went bad one month ago!;)

I liked Underwood last night, my favorite long shot of the moment. If we kept him, he'd end up being a Stanback type probably, some promise, but no production.

I sense bigger heads then Tate's will be gone, so just maybe, if he can play ST for BB that would be ideal.

I bet he will be happy just to make this years team.

Re: Announced cuts: countdown to 53

I bet he will be happy just to make this years team.

He'll make this yr's team, as the 4th CB. Dowling will be the 5th, but will be pressing him for time if Butler doesn't play up to some kind of improvement from last yr.

Not too many other options, + he deserves one more yr/one last shot at showing improvement.

I expect Butler is going to get another shot, not just because he's a high round pick, but because he did show real promise on the field during his rookie season. I still wonder if his friend getting killed in Hartford is what caused him to take a few mental steps backward.

Word is that Arrington's injury isn't anything major. Nothing huge to worry about.

It looked nasty, so I'm glad he's going to be alright.

No Butler didn't have a good preseason, he had numerous passes completed against the man he was covering (the Jacksonville game was especially bad). He makes the team gets one more year to improve, but he didn't play well. Hopefully Arrington and Bodden are healthy and he doesn't play much.

By the way CBs making a lot of tackles isn't considered a good thing.

Whats more bizarre is the never ending defense on this board for NE players like Butler.

Its year 3 for him. I dont beleive BB will pull the plug on Butler when he gave others like Maroney and Wilhite at least 3 years to show something. The fact that you agree with me that Butler is gone if he doesnt show improvemnet this season is proof that you see what everyone else has seen, but want to tell us that hes playing good.

A reception, TD, or PI call in favor of the other teams offense is not good. You need to go back and watch the Cincinnati game from last year when Carson Palmer tormented Butler.

If you want to believe that Butler has really improved OK, but I have a suspicion that this topic will be around all season assuming he makes the team.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone grabs Richard. He's acquitted himself well throughout the preseason, just came out on the wrong side of a numbers game. I think he could be a viable backup for somebody, maybe.

Ditto the other young DL who remain to be cut.

You need a sense of humor. Lighten up.

Point is Butler has not played well.

Besides it's hard for me to take you seriously when after the first preseason game you chimed in and defended Butler's play even before you had a chance to watch the game.

You blindly defended the guy which is basically your schtick.

Would be great if this thread could stay on point - announced Patriots cuts. Lots of other options to discuss who you would/wouldn't cut and why...

BTW there has been the usual confusion about the timing of the cutdown. NFL.com confirms it is 6PM EST (not 4PM as many were reporting earlier).

Yet another unbelievably bizarre post.

If a ref makes a bad call, that's on the player?

Bizarre.

Thanks, I guess I can stop refreshing this thread every 10 minutes.

Another bizarre post.

A CB making tackles isn't a good thing? You want him to miss tackles?

Oh, and a CB gave up passes? This is the NFL! In case you haven't noticed. He broke up passes this preseason and stuck to his man.

He may have struggled a bit vs Jville yes but afterwards had a solid preseason IMO.

That's my assessment too. I don't want to read too much into it, but I think BB will have seen enough to keep him around. He may never be a premier CB, but as long as he does his job, he'll be fine.
