Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

I am guessing Gerard Warren's future in New England is bleaker now than it was 1 hour ago

Gerard was a fine addition to the line last year,I was impressed he still had some left.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

I don't think this signing tells us anything about draft day. Another body to push competition against our current defensive line. Marcus Stroud is not the end all answer to the defensive line woes.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

He is not the monster he used to be, but if he can be a solid player depth or otherwise then it's a good signing. Welcome!

Signing Tommie Harris or Marcus Spears might be the answer if we add ONE more of these guys, then its time to focus on Linebackers and Offensive Lineman in the draft and not have to select a DL until mid to late rounds.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

Stroud as a DE in the 3-4 excels against the run. That's what this team has needed since the close of the 2009 season. It was obvious during a few games last year that Gerard Warren was not that guy.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

Stroud couldn't handle the 3-4 scheme in Buffalo, why do you think he could do it here?

To be fair, Buffalo struggled implementing the 3-4 because they didn't have the personnel and played 4-3 for pretty much the last 3/4ths of the season. George Edwards was an inexperienced coordinator (1 season with Was, 1 month at Florida), and a lot of Bills struggled to play his defense early last year.

I like him better than Gerard Warren because, as Kontra said, he's stouter against the run.

Means very little right now.. could be camp fodder, does not effect the draft.. I guess bill will sign some people before the friday cut off line... but still means little..

Excellent, I hope this means that they have their sights set on Aldon Smith at 17 and an OT at 28.

With the Patriots signing the likes of G Warren last year and Stroud this year, seems BB makes it very clear that he desires girth on his 3 DL formation and the Cameron Jordan's of the draft at 285 don't cut it. Wilkerson fits the template better

I think Jay has me on the JJ Watt bandwagon.

Watt looked real good at the combine Jack, I wouldn't cry over Watt, but it would have to be at 28, 17 has to yield us an edge rusher and Aldon Smith is my binkie at that pick right now or maybe even a small trade up to secure him, he has the size BB likes on the edge.

Has anyone heard the progress of Ty Warren and whether he will be fully recovered if and when TC starts?

BB gave a 5 minute interview with these details but I can't find the link

Watt ain't gonna be around at 28. There are only a couple of 3-4 DE in the draft with elite potential and they aren't going to stick around.

Even more? I wouldn't read anything into it. Veteran depth and mentor, maybe, he'll be 33 in June and this is his 11th season in the league. Gerard Warren circa 2011.

Since he is a seasoned Vet, doesnt his whole contract not count against the cap too?

A stout, former all pro tackle that's 6'6"? talk about your no brainers. Of course they'll draft a DT/DE if available. It's a position they always need to fill.

They had three #1's and can't afford to have all big contracts at the same time, so a rotation of vets, drafts and shots (current FA, low picks) is a given.

Of course, they hit the jackpot with Wilfork at the bottom of the 1st round, so who knows? They don't try to invent players. If the right guy is there at the right spot, they'll draft, or find another way.

With so many teams shifting to a 3-4, it would seem G Warren would draw interest as a nose tackle. There are precious few and they can last a long time. It seems T Washington played till he was about 85.

This could also mean that Wright or Pryor might not be back.

Also, perhaps guys like Deaderick, Love, and Brace might be available. Too many needs and too few supply for 3-4 type guys.

This might also be viewed as the perfect guy to hook to a rookie stud DE. Stroud was the leader in Jax and seemed vocal in Buffalo.
