Randy Moss willing to sit out 2010 season

Would the team that claims him be able to franchise him next year?

Tag & trade possibly?

When they traded for Moss, Minnesota put a franchise tag prohibition in his contract. Since any team claiming him would inherit the contract, he could not be franchised.

yeah... but he is a waste of a roster space.:p

he is also a bad influence on the young ones that are developing chemistry....

go away Randy.... never comeback :)

I really hope you are joking.

Moss actually has great power in all of this. There's no point in paying him $3 million plus and taking up a roster spot so he can putz around at practice and act up.

Why would ANY team want that?

To block him?

Please.

If he shows up at practice and half-arses it, what are you going to do about it? NOTHING.

Why would any team even bother?

He holds a lot of power here.

Trolling, has to be.

Otherwise, how quickly people forget the 259 catches, 3904 receiving yards, and 50 touchdowns in a little over 3 seasons that he helped this offense with. Yup, like it never happened.

So thats why hes talking to the Jets...great

If I were Randy Moss I'd go crawling back to Bill Belichick and say "Pay me on a week to week basis, and if I step out of line in any way cut me. I'll run cross routes over the middle, play hard every down, and catch 1 pass for 10 yards if that's what it takes to get me my ring"

Apparently he isn't joking. lol Look above.
It is really sad, imho.

I thought the team that claims him is responsible for his salary? Maybe a reduced amount?

They're responsible but only if he reports and plays, you dont have to pay any player that doesnt report and play.

Actually, if Moss sits out, that would be great for whoever claims him. They don't have to pay him, and they get a 5th round pick when he walks at the end of a season. Free draft pick.

I know you meant "pay any player", but that sounded too much like Yogi Berra to just pass up commenting on.

If he is claimed and he sits out, does that mean that the Vikings are on the hook for the rest of his salary? Does it mean that the team that claims him is on the hook for his salary and can off-set that by fining him for not showing up? How does that work exactly? I mean, doesn't Randy have to sign a contract?

This is exactly what some people here speculated could happen if Moss was posturing to come back to New England....

This would scare away some teams....but perhaps, there are a few that would be harder to convince that they should not put a claim in on Moss.

I do find it interesting that NO ONE from the Patriots organization has said that the Patriots "Are not interested" or "Will not put a claim in" or in any way has said that the Moss issue...is dead.

Until I hear otherwise, I think the Patriots are monitoring this closely and are withholding comment until the dust settles.

Once his contract is awarded to another team, the Vikings are off the hook. Then if he's fined game checks for not reporting, he forfeits the money. But, like I said above, it would still be a free compensatory draft pick when he walks at the end of the season.

I think they would do that regardless of what they were really thinking. The Patriots never show their cards until they have to.

OK, but there are so many ways for this to blow up for that team.

a) He decides to report
b) He dogs it on the field
c) He pulls a Brandon Marshall in practice, kicking balls, acting up, etc.

Meanwhile he's getting paid, right? Seems like a lot of financial and team risk just to hope for a free compensatory pick.

Just so everyone knows, there isn't some master plan to get him back to NE.
If he doesn't report to the team that claims him, they will put him on the did not report list and when he is on that , he is done for the year (Mankins was not under contract). If does not report, he won't have a choice but to sit out the year. Once he does that TO will seem like a safer bet.

Absolutely. The Patriots are famous for being tighter than Fort Knox...

However....No One from the Patriots organization has put an end to the speculation that he could come back to New England, and Bill has been given several opportunities to comment on it and has not put the issue to bed...which he surely would have done so by now.

Which only makes me think that if there is a chance that he could come back this year...the Patriots will take him.
