I'm not sure what led the Eagles to drop him - anyone have specifics?

But Gaffney's #s through 4 years are pretty solid as you point out. I guess I missed why he was released - that could be why fans seem skeptical of him.

Again - what's the big deal either way, he's going to be our number 5 WR.

Reading Pats1 scouting report on page 1, sounds like attitude. Sounds like a steal with attitude change, or gone.

We don't keep guys with bad attitudes, especially as backups.

doesnt it seem the Pats always bring in 4 guys at a certain position, and end up signing the one you least wanted i.e. poteat over schulters. The other roster spot must be going to Pass.

Yes, but on the flipside, sometimes attitude problems disappear when you come to the Pats. Dillon has been a model citizen since he's been in NE.

Like I said in another thread, I'd compare it to when a good teacher deals with a bad student with a bad attitude, a good teacher can typically change that student's attitude - mainly by discipline and not putting up with any of the student's crap. It all starts with respect for the teacher, and I'm pretty sure anybody coming to NE is going to respect BB.

Ah, then the open spot truly is a surprise.

Actually, I lied.

He can be activated as early as next Monday, October 16th.

I was thinking game 6, when in reality it's week 6.

But that is also the date he can begin practicing, so it could take a week or so of practice to get him back up to speed.

I smell a genius move here. Anybody notice we have three FSU receivers now?

I can hear it now: I guess they were right when they said Florida receivers are no good.

On and on..... With dumb plays like that, no wonder FSU receivers never make it big..... LOL:D

How did he play in the preseason. I remember listening to a local sports station and hearing his name. Basically, they mentioned he would never make the team!

Any idea who they might be looking at? I saw that they had some DBs in for workouts a couple of weeks back..

Patrick Pass coming off the PUP list.

From PFT

"The Pats replaced Sullivan with receiver Jabar Gaffney, another underachiever who jumped from the Texans to the Eagles via free agency. He was arrested over the summer on weapons possession charges, and was cut by the Eagles before making the 53-man roster."

My theory on releasing Poteat:

It's out of respect for the guy. They're giving him a chance to leverage his relatively high-profile performance last week into getting signed by a team that might actually want to keep him around for more than half a season.

Gaffney's no saint. He was a surprise cut by the Eagles because of character issues (the aforementioned weapons charges), but he's a good receiver and should help solidify the shaky corps. I would like Jerry Porter better, but Gaffney was a very solid second/third receiver in Houston with Andre Johnson and Corey Bradford.

Hank will be back. I imagine the conversation went a little along the lines of

BB: "Hank, we're releasing you."
HP: "Should I clear my locker?"
BB: "Nope. See you around week 14."

I assume it was because they drafted a few WRs and traded for Stallworth. Gaffney became expendable. I think he's worth a shot as a #4-5 WR and hopefully he can do something on special teams.

I also agree that extra spot is for Pass. Since the PUP list can be activated after week 6.

Methinks Sullivan will be in a Colts uniform soon.......
i agree.....indy or cincy

On Poteat: The guy just shows up and plays. I know he's not a big-play corner - in a five-year career, he has zero interceptions. But he's a solid tackler and picks up the coverage well. Sorry to see him go. With Dillon, Maroney, Faulk, and Evans, I'd rather have Poteat than Pass.

On Sullivan: Good riddance. He was given every chance to gain a spot in pre-season. He got plenty of time on the field, and we know how the Pats love big defensive linemen. With the physical talents of a top ten draft pick, he was unable to beat out Mike Wright -- or Le Kevin Smith, for that matter. If another roster spot is needed, I assume they'll start searching for Marquise Hill's locker.

On Gaffney: Sounds like an upgrade over Bam Childress of Kelvin Kight as a fifth receiver. It is one more guy who doesn't know the Patriots playbook. The results of bringing in guys like JJ Stokes at this point in the season is bleak. And he could possibly take bye-week rotations away from Jackson and Gabriel. But as a fifth receiver, someone to learn the system for a couple weeks and come in for injuries, he'll be OK.

On Pass: As noted, there is so much depth at RB right now, there's no need to 'rush' him off the PUP list - he has weeks six through nine to come off. His more important contribution would be on special teams. While he is a below-average kick returner, he's OK on kick coverages. I don't see a big need for his type on kick coverage - Alexander is excelling, Davis and Izzo are a little above average.

Not Hank, Not Hank.

I always feel a surge of hope that the defense is about to stiffen and show resolve when he comes back. Maybe, this is just a wild ass guess on my part, but maybe this means Wilson is heading to Corner when he gets back and Hawkins will be the new starter.

Hank is a bit of a surprise but noy JT. Especially with Mike Wright making quite a few good plays as a DT.

Gaffney is a very solid receiver, I'd say a step above Caldwell.

Gaffney is a very solid receiver? lol Only on Patfans.com. He's so solid that he couldn't beat out an undrafted free agent in Philly and no team wanted to touch him for five weeks. Yeah, he's a very solid receiver. I'm with the people from this planet who think he'll be the fifth receiver and catch maybe 12 passes this season. Although since he's so great, I'm assuming you have him as Brady's new top target?

You have a bad attitude, mister.

I think that Gaffney's production through his career could easily be classified as solid. At very least much more solid than David Patten's when he arrived in 2001. And his numbers are quite comparable with Caldwell's.

If Patsfans.com is so moronic, why are you constantly on it? You certainly don't need lessons in sounding like a moron.

What are you talking about? I said he is a very solid reciever and I will stand by that comment...but then you go on to make it sound like I said he's a "great" receiver which I never implied.

Take issue with the poster, not the forum. Many of us didn't want Gaffney, besides you're overblowing what the poster said, in typical troll fashion.

And the "couldn't beat out an undrafted free agent" is pretty disingenuous on your part, weren't you one of the ones (myself included) that were high on Baskett. No? Many of us here wanted him in the draft as a matter of fact. The kid's got a bright future.
