I watched the game against New Orleans again, after watching last nights game....and saw two different teams in a lot of ways.....against NO, we brought the pressure a lot....good run D...secondary looked pretty good (prob because of finally getting some heat on the QB.....then last night looked like our D was awful overall (same thing as last week really) , gave up acres to WR and RB.:..just awful and ugly.....SO..do we have a GOOD defense that has just been playing vanilla last few games...OR is our defense young and a work in progress..

...#2, it's young and a work in progress. Remember, the first two games the two teams practices/scrimmaged together before playing.

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

I guess we'll have to wait for the regular season to find out..

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

Put it to you this way, if Carson Palmer lights up the Pats, it's going to be a rough season for the defense (and that's being nice).

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

1. Brady looks great on the short and intermediate passes. He's scary accurate right now and looks to be his old self against the blitz again. On the deep passes, however, Brady shouldn't hesitate to try to measure the throw. I feel that, when he does this, it usually gets underthrown/intercepted or overthrown. He needs to have more trust in his arm and just uncork the ball the first second he sees daylight.

2. Our slew of running backs will only go as far as the blocking in front of them dictates. Anybody that watched Fred Taylor last night should have seen the difference between preseason games one and two and last night. In the first two games, the O-Line was opening up lanes for Taylor to blow through. Once he gets to the second level, he is hard to bring down. But no RB is going to be able to get through a pair of defensive linemen and a couple of linebackers when they're already in the backfield as the back is receiving the handoff.

3. Really liking what our TE's are doing right now. However, they too are only going to as far as the blocking along the O-Line dictates. If health holds up and Brady is sufficiently protected by the starting five, then the TE's will be free to run routes. This will present serious match-up problems for the defense as Crumpler has shown us that he's an excellent blocker, but still has something left in the tank as a presence in the passing game. Gronk has also shown a great capability of threatening the seam and presenting match-up problems in the red zone based on his sheer size and athleticism alone. However, if the O-Line isn't holding up, those weapons will be about of the passing game as they stay back to block and help protect the franchise. This is why it's deadly important to get some cohesion along the line right now.

4. Our back-up offensive linemen have looked bad this offseason. And that's putting it gently.

5. Really liking our receiving corps. Moss is still a premier deep threat in the league. Tate is a burner who can stretch the field and run intermediate routes. He's also a very underrated blocker. Edelman and Welker should be monsters in the slot. Hernandez threatens the seam, over the middle, up top, and can also line up in the slot and on the LOS, presenting match-up problems for DB's with his size and strength and for LB's with his speed.

6. Defensive line is a question mark. Is Brace a one hit wonder? Probably not. If he gets healthy, he's a better option against both the run and the pass than Gerard Warren. Watching Warren over the preseason, he hardly, if ever, demands double teams. It's been alarmingly easy for the RT to move him in the running game and the only time I've honestly seen him become a presence in the passing game is when a blown assignment occurs along the opposing O-Line. Brace, on the other hand, showed that he's capable of demanding double teams while still holding his own. Wilfork is Wilfork. RDE is still going to be a question mark. On the other side, Wright is great against the pass but is a liability against the run. Whether Brace and Wilfork holding down two spots will be great but, unless something drastic and out of the ordinary happens with Deaderick, there's still going to be a question mark at RDE.

7. The linebackers have some growing up to do. Even Mayo and Spikes. Burgess is a better fit as a 4-3 DE for us than he is a 3-4 OLB. We don't know what we're going to get out of Cunningham yet, but reports out of TC have been mostly positive. TBC needs to limit the boneheaded mistakes.

8. As expected, we're going to see some serious growing pains with the cornerbacks this season. Meanwhile, I'm pretty high on the safety position. Chung and Meriweather can hit and both have pretty good noses for the ball.

Basically, in a nutshell, I'm expecting the offense to carry us through our fair share of games this season and praying for something to occur in the defense. Week 1 will be the first test. After that game, we're going to get a more clear picture of where the defense is really at.

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

top 5 offense middle of the pack defense should win 12 games and the east

and we will see come playoff time how far they will go

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

Our season is going to rest on Brady's shoulders. The defense won't win us games.

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

I see an offense capable of putting 28 points per game on the board and being one of the best in the league and having a TE group that is right up there with the best.

Unfortunately I see this defense giving up about just as many points per game on average as I see a very young and inexperienced defense in the overall picture struggling to find who they really are and will certainly be schooled badly by the likes of savvy veteran QBs like Manning,Rodgers and Favre.

This defense could be the worst of the Belichick era in 2010 - hope I am really wrong.

Expect a lot of high scoring battles like 31-28..35-31 ect:

outside of 2007 , our offense has always been able to play whatever kinda game it needed but not consistently. pre 2007 also we won many 30 plus pt games but our there will be times when it will be bogged down -has happened always. If the defense isnt any good that margin for error goes down so they need to be as efficient as the colts where 3 and outs are quite rare in a game.

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

It's gonna be ST and Offense that wins games this year...I don't see any defensive battles going on....

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

This is my first year on this board, so I have to ask..do you guys always react so strongly to the preseason?

I can't think of any year when the preseason has told us everything (or anything for that matter) we needed to know about this team.

Now, I understand the defense is young and there are a few players who we literally don't know how they will play in this system, but let's not stand on the edge of the Bourne Bridge just yet.

I highly doubt Belichick changed the entire process for how he tackles the preseason this year. He's always gone "vanilla" and this year was no different. Last night was a great example of that. There were a few situations on the Giants opening drive alone, where in a real game BB would have made major adjustments.

So if you're going to put any stock at all in the last 2 games, then it's only fair to put just as much stock in the first 2.

Re: Not sure what to make of this team.....

PATS defense is a victim of PATS "Draft Down for Value" philosophy. They think instead of having couple of damn good key players, they should draft down at every opportunity to get average/bwlow average players. They are afraid to play too much money to the draft picks. I think they are afraid that successful players might ask for too much money like Revis and hence they try to avoid great players and go for good/OK players. That philosophy is resulting in very average team.

This is not just about preseason. We are having a defense that can't stop any decent QB let alone Manning. We can't get off the field under no circumastance for the last few years.

If this bothers you that much than I suggest you find a new team to root for. As long as Belichick is the coach and the Krafts own the team, this isn't going to change.

I disagree. I think that what they avoid doing is trading all of their later picks to get a higher pick in the early rounds. I think their basic approach is to make sure that the whole roster can play ball and not just rely on the top 22. Their drafting also reflects the reality that some top prospects wind up being pretty average players or outright busts (Chad Jackson says "Hi") and that sometimes you find one of the best players of all time in the sixth round (you know, like a certain record-setting, two-time Super Bowl MVP QB).

There are no guarantees in drafting. Sometimes they get lucky, sometimes they don't, sometimes their evaluation of a player is off (shocker: they are not Jedi knights), and sometimes a player is not a good fit in the Pats system/scheme.

Just my opinion, but that's how I see it.

12 wins this year at least. Not sure why people are panicing about this team. Who cares about the preseason.

Thanks for the advice. I will root for PATS and will keep complaining. If that bothers you so much, I suggest you stop reading this forum :)

I hope you are right. We all hope that "D" gets stronger by the middle of the season as in 2001 and hope we win it all.

Everybody needs to stop reacting to pre-season games. They had Buddy Furham playing safety!
