No way Red Sox make the playoffs this year.

Now that it's August it's easy to say the Yankees & Rays are clearly the two best teams in baseball, we won't be catching either of them.

Blaming injuries is lame, you could put a lot of blame on the TERRIBLE start to the season.

FO with your stupid threads would you.

Eh, I can't argue with you this time. I don't think they'll make the playoffs at this point either (hoping for some reverse karma here). But it can absolutely be blamed on injuries. That was one of the worst rash of injuries I've ever seen this team go through.

As a side note, Pete, you still haven't killed yourself yet?

Two things. A) What Aus said. B) What Kontra said.

Only Pete would start a thread like this ...

Pete ... is every day a rainy day ... come on now.

Seriously Pete ... Red Sox are in their position due to injuries and the same could happen to the Yanks or Rays ... too soon to tell. Nothing though would be sweeter than the Sox and Rays beating out the Yankme's. they won last year ... someone else gets a turn this year.

He wouldn't be Pete if he did that.
Personally there's nothing stopping me from reading them apart from my own choice. I'm more aggrieved at the consistent level of negativity that defines his posting.

As much as I would love for them to come back and make the playoffs, I don't think it will happen either.....We would need to win 12 out of our next 15 to put us at the top of the division and that's because we play the yanks 4 times and the rays 3 times in that span.....Now say after the next 2 weeks we are still around 10 games behind then it will be interesting to see how Theo starts to shape up for next year......Our OF needs to be addressed, Starting Pitching is good with Beckett being hurt and Lackey having a down year they could keep this staff together next season and be fine, the bullpen needs to be upgraded.......These are givens but then it becomes tricky.....I would love to say move Youk back to 3rd base and go get Fielder or A-Gonz (Pujols will be a cardinal)......But I really love what Adrian Beltre has brought to this team and I think his errors will go down as he gets more comfortable playing in Boston......I would rather go out and spend the big money on a stud LF and maybe another stud SP to replace Dice-K.....When healthy I would take Beltre/Scutaro/Pedroia/Youk as my infield anyday.......We usually aren't in this position but it's something fun to think about.....

There's plenty of time left. These teams all play each other enough down the stretch, that a bad run by one could open up the door elsewhere. It won't be easy, but it's doable for sure.

Youk is now out with a torn something or other in his thumb...it will need surgery and i think he is done for the season. with this news today, i will say we are done. I cant see us making up ground without Youk.

It will be tough, but Lowell is back, and it's only a 5 1/2 game spread for the WC. It's still doable, since their schedule doesn't seam all that bad, since it includes 16 or so games with the two teams they're chasing.

this next series with the Yanks will be important. Hopefully they can squeak into the playoffs...by then they should be a somewhat full strength and could do some damage

I'm adamant that Kevin Cash is a cancer in this team. We always play **** baseball whenever this useless pleb is behind the plate.

Is Tony Pena available?

How about rich Gedman?

Anyone for Doug Mirabelli?

Not good when your ace gets lit up at home by one of the worst teams in the league. If anything we will know by the end of the yankees series where this team stands.

IMO im just glad football starts up sunday night!

Good win tonight. We're now 5 back from the Yankees and 4 back from the Rays. Bucholtz was pretty good but I have to remember to turn the game off when Papelbon comes in and tries for his last out. The first two outs come easy and the last out is always a heart attack waiting to happen.

The Red Sox really need to take 3 of the 4 games available to them against the Yankees. Tonight was a good start and Lackey needs to be lights out to give the Sox crucial belief with our two aces still to come.

Bucholz is turning into a very very good pitcher.

Nothing's clear with 50+ games to go... but as far as injuries, Francona deserves manager of the year if he makes the playoffs in this division given the extraordinary number of injuries this year.

I'd beg to differ about injuries as an excuse... it's not lame - it;s the fact. If this team had been as healthy as its competitors in the division this year I have no doubt they'd be in 1st place.

It really is the case. Given the injury predicament this team has surprised even the most ardent of Sox fans. Put this list on the Rays or Yankees and they wouldn't be competing.

Lackey was disappointing in two innings. The Yankees scored 4 runs from the same sort of pitch in effect. His competitiveness grips him and ruins his decision making to pitch around batters rather than constantly challenging them.

Game 3 is a must win.

The Red Sox have been very very disappointing in games 2 and 3 against the Yankees. This series has been about missed opportunities for the Red Sox and the Yankees taking theirs.
