Source: Pees has something else lined up
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2010 2:10 PM ET
So why are the Broncos suddenly in line to hire Wink Martindale's kid brother to run the defense in Denver?

Per a league source, top choice Dean Pees has agreed to coach elsewhere. Pees most recently served as defensive coordinator in New England.

We don't know where Pees will land, but we're working on it. Our source is being a little difficult.
Hmm interesting at first I really thought he was lock for Denver's DC position but as time went on it started becoming less apparent. I'm curious where he is going to land..

There are rumors he was in Buffalo yesterday interviewing to be Chan Gailey's DC. If that is the case, it could be the Bills.

Ex-Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees may be in the mix for the same position with the Bills.
Pees, 60, looked to be a shoe-in for the gig in Denver before LBs coach Don Martindale emerged as the favorite. Bills new head coach Chan Gailey also mentioned at his presser that he was open to a change to the 3-4 defense, and Pees would fit that bill.
Ah yeah I see that now interesting...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let this be true.

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

Funny, I heard he was hired by Kraft Food (no relations to Bob) to head up their swiss cheese division. Word on the street was they saw all the holes in the Pats' secondary the last two years and thought it would be a perfect fit.

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

I am really curious to see what happens with all this. I guess over the next few years we will finally settle the question of "Was that crappy D Belichick's or Pees' fault?"

Why would you want someone within the division that knows that much about the inner-workings of the Pats organization?

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

If Pees goes to the Bills. There goes another team joining the 3-4 Defense bandwagon.

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

Florio@PFT:
Though some speculation exists linking Pees to the defensive coordinator position in Buffalo, it's our understanding that the team that has hired Pees has not yet broken the news to the person who currently holds the job.

Since Buffalo doesn't have a defensive coordinator, that would presumably remove them from the mix.

Which means that there's someone out there -- presumably a defensive coordinator -- who is soon going to be getting something other than good news.

Meanwhile, we're told that Pees' departure had nothing to do with his health. "Something went wrong," a source with knowledge of the situation tells us.

Caronlina Panthers? If that's the case the Patriots can forget getting Peppers.

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

I'd think maybe the Giants, or the Redskins.

That's a win for NE.

Giants already have their defensive coordinator. Not too sure about the Foreskins.

Kirby Smart turned down a good deal to go to Georgia, Saban won't be going to Pees unless you have something in mind other than DC.

True, but can you imagine getting to face that defense twice a season? DBs playing way off the receivers, blown coverages, the same thing over and over again, and once we figure it out, no halftime adjustments?

Re: OT: Pees has something else lined up

Maybe he's going to be joining the Jets in some sort of defensive assistant position. Tubby Rex is the one calling the defense so Pees wouldn't be calling the plays. Seems like something the Jets would do to "tweak" the Pats and try to get as much info as they can - particularly about how the Pats defend the Jets.

There is no answer since top 5-10 ranked defenses are not crappy.
