Training Camp: Tuesday Morning Notes
Tom Casale, Patriots Football Weekly

After a day that saw superstars like Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour return to the field, the Patriots went back to work Tuesday morning. Only this time, it was a little-known wide receiver from Florida who stole the show.

...

Although his return may not be as ballyhooed as the guys who came back on Monday, rookie Garrett Mills made his debut at training camp today. Mills had missed the team’s first 14 practices but was glad to finally be back with the rest of the team.

...

As usual, some players were held out of practice. Tedy Bruschi, Chad Jackson, John Stone, Ben Watson, Marquise Hill, Jarvis Green, Chad Brown and Troy Brown, along with the two players still on PUP, all missed the morning session. Graham was still wearing a red non-contact jersey.

...

Who’s Hot: Kelvin Kight – Last week out at practice I predicted that Kight would make the Patriots practice squad and I’ve been ridiculed by one of my PFW colleagues ever since. Well, Tuesday the former Gator did me proud by having the best practice of any young receiver to date. Up until now, Kight has shown good hands in pass catching drills but hadn’t seen a lot of balls thrown his way when the team went 11-on-11. However, with Stone missing practice, Kight lined up as the third receiver with the first-team offense and took advantage of his opportunity. He caught one pass from Tom Brady coming across the middle where he reached up for the ball, hauled it in and then turned on the jets to get upfield. He also had the play of practice on a bomb from Matt Cassel (see below). Kight stayed after practice to work on catching the ball and his route running, something he’s done routinely since arriving in New England. He has such a strong work ethic that he declined my request to interview him, saying he would get me tomorrow because he had to go inside and study. That’s the kind of player you root for to win a roster spot. Even though he arrived at camp late, Kight has picked up the Patriots system quickly and that drew the praise of Belichick at his Tuesday press conference.

Now that is news. Mills is one to watch - hope to hear more about his return to the field.

Who is not HOT: Sullivan manhandled by Dan Stephenson and all others.

Hobbs continues to be so-so.

Kelvin Kight, LMFAO. Where do they find these guys?! Look out Deion!;) Casale's going overboard -- I'm not penciling him in based on anything that occurs in training camp, but sounds like a great kid with a legit shot.

we have the only QB in history who can get the EXACT SAME STATS every year no matter who his WRs are.

Definitely something to root for.

Why haven't we heard anything about Jeremy Mincey? I havent read ANYTHING about his progress or lack there of.

Well, Belichick compared him to Childress and Casale said he thinks he could wind up on the practice squad. I didn't see where he said he would make the Pro Bowl. Then you said he has a legit shot, so you agree 100 percent with what the writer said. Am I wrong?

You know what's a pity?

This guy having this attitude, and Bethel having Bethel's attitude. Now to be fair Bethel was often praised for working out and conditioning.. but I'm not sure he ever ran routes in practice, never mind after practice. He sure as hell never ran a recognizable route in a game.

You know what would be cool? If this guy's work ethic gets him on the PS, then eventually on the team. If, of course, he's good enough.

I'm not sure he's Practice Squad eligible anymore.

That's correct:

http://www.jaguars.com/Story/1499.asp

Vic: Each NFL team may assemble a five-man developmental group, or practice squad, following final roster cuts. Any player who has not been on a team's 45-man active roster for nine or more games in a single season is eligible for the practice squad, provided they haven't already used their two-year practice squad eligibility. Three weeks on any practice squad in a season constitutes a year. Each practice squad member will make $68,000 a season, or $4,000 a week. That money, $340,000 for the whole squad, is counted against that team's salary cap. One team may sign a player from another team's practice squad, but that player must be moved immediately to the claiming team's active roster. The Jaguars claimed guard Aaron Koch from the Titans' practice squad last September. Here's a little trivia for you: Jonathan Quinn is technically eligible for the practice squad, since he has never spent nine games in any season on the Jaguars' 45-man active roster.

I'm sure Sullivan has been active for nine games in one season.

First it was Chad (Scott), now this!

:bricks:

But honestly, I just looked at the post you were quoting, so "Bethel attitude," and made my assumption from there.
