Cowboys are shopping LB Greg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

After he's cut, there should be interest from teams who have any need at OLB. I would expect that at least a couple may want him at more than than vet minimum.

Of course, the patriots have no need. After all we are well stocked that future stars like Redd might not even make the team.

UPDATE : The Cowboys have released Ellis just now - Greg Ellis is a FREE MAN and can now join any team that wants him - Cincinnati is my guess as to where he will go but now NE would not have to give up anything to get him but some cap money so we will see if they are still not interested in him.

Great news. Another guy we'll pass up on.

I'll be pretty shocked if he doesn't draw interest from BB. Expect Mangina & the Tuna to also kick the tires.

If he wants a chance to start and make money instead of being a backup on better teams, he might want to look towards Kansas City.

PFW in Progress seems to think that the Patriots should look his way if they don't have to trade for him (i.e. wait until he can be had for the vet minimum). I hope they jump at him and let him compete, but I guess Deus has a point, too.

Well NE is still a good team but also has a an option at Ellis's position for him to win if he wants to come here - No need to go to KC to start

New England can't really pay him as much, which is why I pointed to K.C. For just starting, I completely agree with the idea that K.C. is not his only option. He'd be able to compete for the starting job in New England, but he'd probably be a shoe-in for it if he went to K.C., and pretty close to one if he went to Denver.

Maybe it is me but Ellis would improve depth across the board. It would allow Thomas to move inside and outside and improve the pass rush. Sadly hall of famer TBC would be cut.

ROLB - Thomas, Crable, Redd
RILB - Mayo, Lenon
LILB - Bruschi, Guyton
LOLB - Ellis, Woods

If he can be signed for $2M or so they have replaced Vrabel for 1/2 the money.

Lets do it! Sign Ellis, extend Wilfork and then we can relax until August.

How much was Vrable due? $4MM this year? Because obviously they would have to sign Ellis for significantly less than what Vrable would have gotten, as the perception will be they're "essentially the same player," so you better get Ellis at a much better value.

Sadly, someone will probably overpay and it will be All Pierre, All the Time. :(

Schein says Ellis will land either in New England,Cincinnati or Miami ... odds in that exact order.

Hey, I'm all for the Patriots getting him. More competition is a good thing. It seems to me that it's going to come down to what he wants in his final year(s). If he wants the rings, New England's the place for him. If he wants to squeeze out the nickels, he'll need to look elsewhere.

Cincinnati? He must have a criminal record, then. They probably wouldn't take him otherwise.

Ellis is a better option that Jason Taylor and Derrick Burgess. Younger than Taylor, better size and has outside LB experience which makes him better than Burgess.

8 sacks last year.

He will come on the cheap.

Is there any reason why the Patriots shouldn't sign him?

Because BB has faith in Woods,Crabel or Banta Cain?:eek: ... god help us

The one problem with Ellis is that he wasn't keen on playing in the 3-4 in the past. Maybe after he saw he could have success in it, he has changed his mind.

I think the Pats will go after him since they have made several attempts to improve the OLB position. They also could use interest Ellis as leverage to get a trade done with the Raiders for Burgess if the Raiders are really interested in trading him.

Does he have inside info or was that just his best guess?

I would venture it was a guess and based on who needs an OLB the most, but Schein is pretty good sometimes at his 'guesses'

I do know this - Now that Ellis is out in FA with no strings attached he will not be unemployed longer than sunday IMO - If NE wants him they need to step it up and quick or some other team will sign him.

Knowing the Pats had interest in Burgess and JT I cant imagine then not taking a good look at Ellis.
