It's easy, and only takes a few moments.Sure - but that's not my point....The only way Peppers is traded is if the team receiving him has the available cap space for his franchise figure, which for the Pats case would be another 8.8 million....Peppers ONLY gets traded when he signs the tender of which is about 17 million...The pats can restructure that deal..but per NFL rules they have to initially have the 17 million available which is his franchise figure...
I DONT THINK THIS DEAL CAN ACTUALLY BE DONE UNLESS THE PATRIOTS CLEAR ABOUT 9 MILLION in CAP SPACE.....
This is my favorite quote from the Jets board and there are some good ones..
"Don't worry Jets fans. The Patriots may about to be getting a top 10 pass rusher still in the prime of his career but we added Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard...
wait a minute, we're f*cked."
i never thought that a peppers deal was possible...now im starting to hope
I'm past the point of hope I'm expecting this to get done now, too much momentum being built up I'd be crushed if it don't.
i never thought that a peppers deal was possible...
Obviously just to mess with us this could drag on for quite a while. So lets just lay back kick up the ol sandy grub and squeeze squeeze squeeze. Man I love this time of year.my question is why would they wait til after the coaches meeting?
It is actually really easy to get around this. Peppers and the Patriots will agree to a multi year deal. The Panthers will sign him to that deal, making the franchise tag figure go away. Then the panthers trade peppers to new england, along with that new contract, and the draft picks they agree on. Hence, no cap of 9 mil is needed.
It is a sign THEN trade scenario that has happened many times when dealing with the franchise tag.
But the Panthers can only sign him to a deal like this if there is no signing bonus involved. If a signing bonus is included the Panthers not the Pats would be responsible for the cap hit. So this will never happen. Also it couldn't be guaranteed contract because Carolina would be hit with cap money, which not what Carolina wants.
Per NFL rules an NFL team wishing to trade for a franchised player....(in order for Peppers to be traded he MUST sign his franchise)....the team receiving him MUST have the cap space available for his FULL franchise figure....the team CAN restructure the contract...but either way they HAVE to have the initial figure available..(in this case 17.6 mill?)...we do NOT have that....
Is a sign-and-trade possible?
I don't know...I do know that the Panthers have the option of signing him to an alternate deal that is worth GREATER than or EQUAL to the value of his franchise figure in his franchise year....so it doesn't sound like that is a possibility either....
If you recall...the initial report of the deal involving Mike Vrabel and Matt Cassel was first rumored by David Yudkin over at footballguys.com....turned out to be true
He is an agreement with me on this:
"The reason why Carolina will have a tough time dealing Peppers is he's going to be paid $16.68 million this year. That's a lot of money for one player that's not a QB (heck, that's a lot even for a QB).
As of right now, NE could not make this deal as they don't have the cap space. NE is approximately $7.8 million under the cap as of today. So they need to clear $8.8 million of cap space to be able to do this. And that would leave them nothing to sign any rookies.
They will need to get busy restructuring, extending, and renegotiating deals for this trade to happen. "
Peppers to the Patriots for a 2nd round pick! - Footballguys Forums
As you weigh this rumour, also remember Pat Kirwan has included the Pats trading a pick (#23, though) to the kitties for Peppers in his mock draft, and has been talking about this deal for about a month. That's two reputable guys at NFL.com putting it out there.

I didn't know that that was what he did with his number 23rd pick. do you happen to have a link to that Mock?
