Patriots sign TE Chris Baker

Let me be the first to say it, Pats picking through the Jets trash again. :)

I was hopeing the Jets would be able to resign him.

Baker is an above average blocker, has great hands, good route runner, his major knock is that he is sloooow.

Pats just got better.

Gunnails, I like that you're unbiased to some degree on a sports forum. Hopefully he doesn't give up a sack to Bart Scott. ;)

I love that we're filling some of the offensive holes via free agency. means another defensive draft, and another chance at landing a Mayo, Seymour, Wilfork type defensive cornerstone.

maybe they can convert watson to CB. he can run fast and not catch the ball but knock it down.something he specializes in.

The Jets GM Tannenbaum, overpaid for Baker, and the price came due. I wonder what BB paid? A lot less I would think. At a reduced price, Baker becomes a major depth and weapon to what is already the best Offense in the League.

There is not much room to add even scrubs to this Offense.

Isn't it lovely to harvest good contributing players from the woeful JEST? Bye scrub TE ... Back to the PS, We hardly knew ya, Tyree? Tyrone ?

Baker is a pretty decent TE. His numbers went down because of the emergence of Keller. A good #2. If he can block, the better. I like this signing.

Sounds like a solid pickup. Like I said TE was a need coming into this year. We were definitely NOT set with just Watson and a questionable Thomas at the TE position.

How about a 6'3" 255# SS with sub 4.5 speed? "The next Rodney Harrison". :D

IMO With the signings of Fred Taylor and Chris Baker, also with Brady coming back. This offense will be back to high gear to be honest i think it will be a higher gear than that!!I smell another superbowl victory!!

I especially like it because I'm very, very, very unimpressed with this year's TE class.

Probably a B, B- type of class. I don't think it's unimpressive though.

This is a solid signing for the Pats.

This will make a lot of Patriot fans happy

After reading up on Baker, he seems like a perfect fit. A good blocking TE with potential in the passing game.

... and he probably hates Mangini as much, or more than most Patriots fans!

Just watched NFL live and they showed it being a 5yr/$14 mil deal. Not bad for a great run blocking/good receiving TE, but I honestly expected a cheaper deal than that. Maybe it is back-loaded? Anyway, I like this signing too. Seems like he's going to be a Pat for a while (not like the Kyle Brady experience).

Update... Mangini has officially changed his name to mangina that is all!!

I thought I heard that he said it himself on a NY radio show.

Here's what he said on Rich Cimini's blog.

THE BORDER WAR: Former Jets TE Chris Baker signed with the Patriots, a deal believed to be at least four years. I caught up with Baker Friday afternoon, and he said the Jets never made an attempt to re-sign him. "The Patriots were really aggressive," he said. "The Jets never pursued me. ... My agent called them the other day, just to tell them I was going to visit New England, and (the Jets) really didn't have a response. It didn't go much further than that. I wanted to feel wanted, and the Patriots made me feel wanted. I feel very fortunate. I get to play with Tom Brady and Randy Moss, two Hall of Famers."
