Re: Pioli thinks cassel hasn’t signed franchise tender

ProFootballTalk.com - PIOLI THINKS CASSEL HASN’T SIGNED FRANCHISE TENDER

what is this ? how can cassel become a free agent like florio suggests if he doesnt sign the tender ?

Yeah, I just posted this in the other SP thread: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...three-we-could-23-pioli-said.html#post1288824

Yeah he be a free agent till he signed the tender but it would cost the signing team a 1st and 3rd in compensation.

Re: Pioli thinks cassel hasn’t signed franchise tender

1st and 1st if I'm not mistaken... 1st and 3rd is what most here on this board think the Pats'll get for Cassel in a trade. I think that if a team just outright signs him - they need to fork over two #1s.

That is correct. Cassel did send a letter to the NFL offices "accepting the tender," but I don't know if that negates the possibility of an offer sheet.

Re: A quick question for all the GMs out there

The latest from Adam Schefter regarding Pioli's statements:

NFL.com Blogs Blog Archive Chiefs GM casts doubt on Cassel deal

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli casted doubt on whether Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel had signed his franchise tender.

"He's hasn't signed," Pioli said Saturday in response to a question about whether Kansas City would have any interest in trading for Cassel. "You can't trade for a player that's not signed under contract. That's my understanding. I haven't looked into it far enough. But I believe he hasn't signed … I don't think … I think two or three franchise players have signed. I don't think he has, I don't think."

But a league source confirmed Sunday that not only had Cassel signed it, but the contract was handed to Patriots senior adviser Floyd Reese.

One reason there are questions about whether it has been signed could be that teams do not report the signings to the league until the first day of the new league year, Friday Feb. 27. Once that day comes and goes, the records will show that Cassel has signed.

And a potential trade for him will be in play.
---

I think this just about settles the issue. In five days we'll receive confirmation. Soon thereafter all potential suitors will be free to reveal their trade offers for Cassel, leaving us no longer shrouded by the master.

So did Cassel really sign the franchise tender??

Re: so did Cassel really sign the franchise tender??

Why would Pioli say this?

Why would Pioli say this?

As Schefter noted, the Pats aren't required to report one way or the other until FA begins.

As for Pioli, who knows?

Did Schefter really write "casted?"

Maybe Pioli didn't want to discuss or answer questions about Cassel. What would it benefit him? Like his mentor BB, Pioli will play his cards close to the vest.

Initially the report was that Cassel announced his intention to sign the tender. There was no report to my knowledge that he actually did in fact sign it.

I think Pioli may have been going out of his way to make a point that he no longer has any insider information about the Patriots.

Part that, but also part of an attempt to brush aside Cassel trade questions. Not a big deal.

Re: so did Cassel really sign the franchise tender??

Adam Schefter just reported that Cassel has signed the Franchise tender:

Cassel’s franchise tender submitted to NFL
Posted: February 23rd, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Matt Cassel, New England Patriots

Let there be no more questions, doubts or speculation. It’s official.

The one-year, $14.6 million contract franchise tender that Patriots QB Matt Cassel recently signed was turned into the NFL today. Now that Cassel has signed, the speculation about whether he will be traded can begin.

The feeling around the combine is that it won’t be easy, but for the right price, New England would be willing to deal.

So Pioli was right. It hadn't been submitted, which is the same as "not signed" in the eyes of the league.

So Pioli knew the status of the contract and spoke about swapping from #3 to #23 and vice-versa. Let's just say... "hm."

Yep, today. That means Scott was technically right. Which means aware of the situation without even reaching into his memory banks.

For a personnel man/GM with a new team at the combine, that's some impressive skill... or not. :D

Yea, for Scott to know that is telling. I mean, either he's talking to Matt or the Patriots are talking to Scott. Tampering is involved in some way, I guess.

Either way, it's odd.

I'm sure that Scott is not doing anything illegal in the eyes of the NFL. It could be as harmless as him asking a question and getting an answer from a Patriot FO person or Bill.

Or maybe the league makes this information available to all 32 teams so that there can be no doubt about a players status at any given time.
