Browns officially request permission to interview Pioli [Update: Granted]

Something that I remembered from previous years. The Pats have allowed Pioli to interview with any and all teams. And Pioli has turned them down.

Also, The Browns asking for permission means that Pioli is still under contract with the Patriots.

We'll probably see a similar statement like this one soon: Statement from Patriots V.P. of Player Personnel Scott Pioli

If Pioli didn't leave and take $3 mil per year for 5 yrs from the Seahawks and he didn't take the job from the team he grew up following (NY Giants), I don't see him going anywhere this time either. I'm also assuming that he signed a 5 yr deal w/the Pats back in 2005 when Seattle came calling: Patriots ink extension with Pioli

Pioli and BB have constantly driven in the point to their players that it's not about money, it's about winning and working with people you respect. I think Brady illustrates that point in this piece: All Things Scott Pioli: Story Archive

Not For Love Or Money
06-Sep-2006, Boston Herald

"[Tom] Brady was asked recently how the players view the Pats organization in relation to the often tough stances it takes at contract time. '…The most important reason for me why I play here is to win,' Brady said. 'I realize I'm not going to be the highest-paid player, and that's fine. I'm not going to feel the most love from my coach … but you know you're going to win. So I feel like I can deal with everything else, because that's what I want. … We're trying to build something special, and it's not about who spends the most money. There are a lot of teams that spend a lot of money that don't perform well. We consistently perform well.'"

Imo, Pioli stays.

Re: Browns officially request permission to interview Pioli

Aren't the Browns a little too fond of dipping into the Pats organization for replacements? First RAC, now that they discarded him, they are after Pioli? And how highly can you think of your job security with Cleveland when they canned Romeo AFTER he signed a 3 year extension??

Pioli, Mangini, and Belichick all had ties with the Browns before they joined the Patriots.

Re: Browns officially request permission to interview Pioli

Yeah but part of the problem with the Jets was that they forced the square peg of the 3-4 on the round hole of non 3-4 players...... and look how that turned out......

how the jets season turned out was not because of the key elements in their 3-4 defense.........outside of some of their LB's difficulty in pass coverage, their front 7 was pretty damned good.......

I believe bryan thomas would be helpful here........I see him being the first one out the door in their front 7 when they need to make cap cuts

Yeah, they retooled pretty well for the 3-4 this season, but in years past, with guys like Jonathan Vilma, they just weren't playing to their players' strengths. Mark of a bad coach, imo.

Yes but the question still remains why was the permission granted in the past and now?

Was it so Kraft puts out the image that he is not holding anyone back and Pioli had/has no interest.

or Did he have interest and Kraft was not going to get in the way but once he looked into it more he didn't want those specific jobs. If this is the case we should be nervous he may be gone.

Do you want an employee working for you that want out?

In other words do you want the front office version of Randy Moss in Oakland, a talented individual that wants out and is willing to suck like **** so you will get rid of him?

Kraft is being smart. He tell Scott I really want you to be here, but if this isn't where you want to be feel free to interview elsewhere, I won't hold you back. And Scott responds by saying I am happy here.

Pioli and Mangina?????? to link up in Cleveland?

According to the Browns owner Randy Lerner, that what he wants.

Say it ain't so?

No effing way would I want to see that happen in Cleveland. Can't believe Pioli would go for it either.

Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting it:

Cowher tells Browns no; Pioli to be interviewed for GM

Lerner said he's received permission to talk to New England Patriots Executive Vice President Scott Pioli and that he'll focus on the general manager role next.

Lerner said he's receiving permission to talk to another unnamed NFL exec. He appeared interested when informed that Eric Mangini had been fired by the New York Jets this morning. Mangini, a former Browns employee, worked with Pioli in New England.

Re: Pioli and Mangina?????? to link up in Cleveland?

No. If Pioli were to go there, why on earth would he hire the guy who betrayed his organization and attempted to pilfer its players on his way out? Not a chance.

One poster indicated that the Browns roster is a mess, so Pioli shouldn't want to go. That is exactly why he might.

Pioli has connections to the Browns. He would get the control which he now shares with Belichick (and even with Jonathan). He would be able to readily put together a staff with Josh, Mangini and Romeo all likely ready to work for Scotty. Personally, if I were Pioli, I'd take Josh and Romeo. As for the QB situation, I would think that the Browns might wait for a certainly QB to be available after the patriots decided that they couldn't afford the $14M franchise tender signed by their backup QB.

This is perfect situation for Pioli. He might pass, but this situation won't come again. As was posted, the last time was several years ago. I

Why would the Browns want to bring in a former Pats DC who failed as a head coach, when he has even less experience than the LAST former Pats DC who failed as a head coach?

You misinterpreted what I was asking. By no means am I assuming Kraft is trying to hold him back. I am asking if Kraft knowing that Pioli wants to stay would make that comment to make sure everyone is aware that he is not holding anyone back. Because he made the same comments last time and it appeared Pioli had no desire to go anywhere.

or Was Pioli genuinely interested in improving his status but decided the last openings were not to his liking.

Lerner is likely guessing that pioli might want Mangini. Lerner has no chance of getting a good Executive VP if he will meddle in the decision to pick the coach.

As I indicted elsewhere, I think that Jsoh is a more likely choice. If Mangini were to be considered as part of a pioli team, it would be as the DC.

And Mangini's loyalty is not an issue, anymore than Belichick's loyalty was when he was hired from the jets.

Honestly, why would Pioli want to leave? He has something special going on with the Pats.

I have no insight into Pioli but if he wanted to move on Cleveland is a good choice. Lerner is no genius but he seems to give his GM money, authority and time: Savage had a long run and made a mess of it. It is a historic franchise with passionate fans. There are some good players already there and no obvious poison in the locker room (unless you count their problem with Staph infections, yuck).

Your post was good except for this point. Ya might wanna lay off the sauce a bit ;)

Exactly.

Losing Pioli would be a HUGE blow to the Patriots. Not an insurmountable one, but damn, it would hurt.

Re: Browns officially request permission to interview Pioli

Are you saying that Piolio doesn't know what he is doing in the draft room? Maybe thats not what you intended but thats how the wording sounds?

It could be the worst part of not making the playoffs is giving these other teams a crack at Pioli. Losing him would suck.

Yeah, I noticed that as I read through this again. What I meant by the was more like: "I'm sure Kraft can promote someone who knows what they're doing in the draft room as well as Pioli does". Yes, losing him would suck. But it's the NFL. Moves and changes happen... even to dynasties. If he has to go, he has to go.

I doubt the authority issue is big to Pioli. I.e., I guess that BB pisses him off rarely, and when he does, it's usually in ways that even a coach subordinate to a GM could do equally well.

But if he's not making #1 guy money yet, I'm guessing he needs a raise or else he's gone.

Are Pioli's kids still in school? If so, his family surely wants him to stay here.

He has to decide if he wants to leave. Based on the articles I have read:

He loves New England

Works with the best owner in sports

Still has growth potential

However, ownership is correct to let him interview. One never wants any resentment to develop.

Re: Browns officially request permission to interview Pioli

The Browns are offering him their GM position. I wondered how much has changed for Pioli since 2006 when he turned down the Seahawks GM position and multi-millions. We haven't seen any indication from him that he is looking to leave(besides anonymous sources that Mort and Peter King make up in their heads...)

The Big Show doesn't coach in Cleveland! ;)
