I think Woods played a decent game and was pretty fast in getting near the QB

While I think Pierre is a liability in coverage which was one of Adalius's best talents,I think he will do O.K. in place of Thomas as I think Guyton and his speed will make up for not having AD in slot coverage and I look for Woods to become a pass rusher from the outside more often than AD and more like Colvin did here.

Is Woods going to be an adequate replacement for AD in your opinion or not?

Something between A and B. It'll be a noticeable drop-off, but not a big one.

I read A as meaning there was a drop off. An adequate replacement doesn't mean to me that the backup player is just as good as the starter. It just means that he isn't a liability. Examples of inadequate replacements include guys like Monty Beisel and his ilk.

Selection 'A' does not mean that Woods is as good as Thomas but more or less means that you will not see a big difference in execution when Woods is out there and Thomas is not as if to say the OLB position won't skip a beat

I voted "C". I can't believe that anyone would vote for "A".

IMO, the main problem with multiple young guys replacing Thomas will be when teams play a hurry-up offense, not allowing for substitutions. No way any one of these guys is going to replace a 8 yr vet with Thomas' pedigree, but BB will find a way to cover all the bases most of the time. In the meanwhile, these youngsters are getting invaluable experience that will translate into a real jump next yr.

Mattyice appreciates your support and I'm sure Pierre will too.

Defensive snapshot - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com
A look at the snaps played by Patriots defensive players in the team's 34-31 overtime loss to the Jets, which can sometimes help explain how different defenders are being utilized:

OLB Mike Vrabel -- 77 of 77
S James Sanders -- 77 of 77
S Brandon Meriweather -- 77 of 77
CB Ellis Hobbs -- 75 of 77
ILB Jerod Mayo -- 73 of 77
OLB Pierre Woods -- 72 of 77
-----
ANALYSIS: One of the big questions entering the game was how the Patriots would replace Adalius Thomas. The answer was that Pierre Woods took over most of Thomas' duties, playing OLB in the base 3-4 alignment, a WLB role in the 4-3 alignment, as well as playing in the nickel (5 defensive backs).
Substitution doesn't seem to be the plan.

I was pleasantly surprised at how he looked in pass coverage as I thought he looked lost in space in that role at certain times in sub packages and in preseason. I thought he looked ok in the pass rush, though he seemed to be relying solely on a speed rush and didn't use leverage very well nor did he show much in the way of moves, and while I didn't catch him everytime against the run, the few times I noticed him he seemed to get sealed on the corner much easier than you would like. Again, wasn't always able to catch the full action on these, but a couple times it looked like the tight end who sealed him as well. On at least one of the plays, Mayo filled admirably and made it not as significant an issue, but I would really like to see Woods get a better hold on the corner, and develop a bit more functionality when engaged both against the run and in pass rush situations. Hopefully that comes with a bit of experience if AD is out for most of the year.

Patriots optimistic they can overcome loss of LB Thomas

Nov. 15, 2008

A source close to the Patriots tells us that the team is better equipped to handle the likely season-ending loss of OLB Adalius Thomas than initially believed. OLB Pierre Woods, a third-year career backup who was once thought to be nothing more than a situational pass rusher, proved against the Jets that he can stand up surprisingly effectively against the run. Also, his liability in coverage is somewhat mitigated by versatile LB Gary Guyton, an undrafted rookie revelation who can play both inside and outside.

It was one game . if you compare AD first game playing over 90% of the snap we can compare .but i do not follow the ravens and not in 01 so please let me know how he was.

I have a feeling woods had a better day then AD had on his first start playig 90% of the snap.
