Darius Miles signed by Celtics

Can he play QB?

i say he should be healed...he is coming off a two year rest from micro fracture surgery. Nice player!

What is he a PF player?

Does it mean Scal is gone?

:eat3: .... :yeahthat:

From the 2000 draft.

http://espn.go.com/nba/draft00/players/player_bio87.html

"Miles is a tremendous prospect that has size, long arms and startling athleticism. He is quick off his feet, runs the court very well and has good overall skills. Miles is not a knock-down outside shooter, but has the tools to be a capable shooter. Miles is best attacking off the dribble, where he has a good first step and finishing capability.

The thing that convinces most about Miles is his understanding of the game at a young age. He's a very good passer, and understands that he is not the center of the universe on every play out on the floor. His court vision is good, which helps him instinctively make good basketball decisions." -- ESPN's Jay Bilas

From the same site ... here's a little blood pressure check.

Jerome Moiso
Drafted by: Boston, Round: 1, Pick: 11
College: UCLA
Height: 6-10
Weight: 235 lbs.

"Moiso has all the skills to be a solid pro. He is a long and lean lefthander with good athleticism and a soft touch. He has range to at least 20 feet, and can run very well. Moiso is a very good shotblocker and can rebound the ball when he feels the spirit moving within him. His downside is simple -- Moiso does not yet understand how to dominate or control a college game, so how could he be expected to make the transition and be a great player on the NBA level? He can't be expected to do it, but he's in the draft, and the only real question for teams to ask is 'is there a better player available?'."-- ESPN's Jay Bilas
That was a lousy draft ... here's the main page for it.

That was one of the worst drafts in NBA history.

As for Miles, he was a super talent coming into the league. Some people thought he had the potential to be a franchise player. His shooting is suspect, but his athleticism, and abilities are not. The signing is a good one as it's a non guaranteed deal. Micro fracture surgery is something that few players return from. Those that do, tend to lose a half a step or more. Players like Anfernee Hardaway, Chris Webber, Jamal Mashburn, and Allan Houston had it, and became fodder. Antonio McDyess was a beast until he had it, and now he's a role player. There have been successes like Stockton, Kidd, and even Amare Stoudamire this past season. It's a risky surgery though, and it will be interesting to see how it affects a guy, Miles, who relies on athleticism for a major part of his game. A nice signing though.

Apparently the Celtics knew this, but according to Boston.com among other sources, Miles has been suspended for 10 games assuming health for drug violations. It won't let me post a link because I have under 30 points, which is very weird but oh well.

I think it was reported at the time of the signing that the Celtics knew he would be suspended at the beginning of the season so this is not a great surprise.

hopefully he can fill in to some extent as the 6th man like posey last year

i have a feeling losing posey is gonna be really tough next year

indeed and I don't think he would have played to much the first few weeks

The number "10" is also notable for Miles in another way. If Miles plays more than 10 games this season for the Celtics, or any other NBA team, his $9.3 million annual salary will be picked up by the Portland Trail Blazers, fulfilling the terms of the NBA's career-ending injury policy.

he will play 10 games, therefore he will be free for the celtics

Well this experiment is over. At least with the C's.

From Boston.com....

The Celtics waived forward Darius Miles today, trimming the roster to 15 players, the league maximum once the season begins.

Miles, the third pick in the 2000 draft out of high school, missed the last two seasons after having microfracture surgery on his right knee. He has not played in a regular season game since 2005-06, when he was with the Portland Trail Blazers.

He has averaged 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in his injury-plagued and often disappointing NBA career, but Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said Miles, who was signed as a free agent Aug. 22, 2008, made a good impression during his brief time with the club.

“Darius was a model citizen during his time here in Boston. He showed that he still has a lot of basketball left in him.” said Ainge said in a press release.

The 6-foot-9-inch, 235-pound forward appeared in six preseason games for the Celtics, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game.

Miles, 27, was the only player in camp with a non-guaranteed contract, and the writing may have been on the wall when he did not see any action in Friday night's preseason loss to the Knicks. By waiving Miles, the Celtics are not required to make another move before the season begins on Oct. 28, meaning Sam Cassell, Bill Walker, Patrick O'Bryant, Gabe Pruitt, and Brian Scalabrine can all remain on the roster if the Celtics wish.

Miles would have been suspended for the first 10 games of the season for testing positive for a banned substance, the diet drug phentermine, which he has denied taking.

The Blazers are likely celebrating the Celtics' decision. Had Miles played 10 games during this season or next, the remaining $18 million on the six-year, $48-million contract he signed with Portland would go back on the Blazers' books, though it wouldn't count against the salary cap because, as the Oregonian reported in July, an independent doctor determined the injury was career-ending.

When Darius was playing with the third squad at the Celtics open practice, I did not think he was long with this team.

figured this move was coming
