I'm not sure this is that complicated. We have a long offseason to debate and ponder, but, in my opinion, there are 3 fundamental factors at work that have hurt the D.
1. Bad drafting: As Mike Reiss and others have noted, the Patriots didn't draft well between 2005 and 2008.

Watson is a potentially fast and dangerous weapon. But he has never panned out to what many prognosticators thought would happen. So that suggests he is unlikely to turn into Dallas Clark in a week. But he could play a bigger role and a productive one at that.
Dale and Holly are suggesting that Aiken wont' be playing either. So that's bad. But I do think Watson can potentially do a lot more than he has done so far this year.
And it is true, based on what we heard in the postgame, that the Pats game plan in the second half was about getting Brady...

The playoffs are for surviving and moving on, whatever tricks or nonsense you have to pull out. It is true that success is less likely when you have things established than when you have to try new things though. But I wonder if the Pats will work hard at practice...
