I got here by trading from 3 to 4 and from 4 to 5, with the assumption that Daniels went at 2 and I kept trading down by 1 slot till only one of Maye and McCarthy were left, taking small comp as I went. Got good quality for each of the 7 picks.
My favorite deal remains trading down 1 spot with AZ for minor compensation - eg swap 34 for their 27, plus their 4th rounder. Get something for little to no risk. Incent AZ by making them think that the Chargers want to trade up to 3.
if we trade down to 11, I think Denver at 12 will not trade up after the Zack Wilson acquisition and with Stidham also on the roster. The Raiders at 13 are a threat to jump above 11 though. So if you assume worst case is that Chicago, Washington, Minnesota, and the Giants all take QB's at 1, 2...
Good trade for Denver, for a late round pick swap. Wilson's problems are mental/psychological. This gets him back home/out west where he'll be more comfortable and close to family. He was probably a Broncos fan growing up. Plus will work for an offensive coach who may be able to turn him around...
I agree with Ted Johnson who said yesterday that his home run scenario is to trade back, get some high draft choices, and take Penix as our QB, who he feels is as good as any of these guys.
For the QB's in question, it's the difference between 22 (McCarthy, Maye) vs 24 (Daniels, Penix). It shouldn't be a consideration at all imo. QB is more about experience than strength/speed anyway, plus at the other end of their careers it also doesn't matter very much.
I see the cup half full. Becoming a 8-9 win team again is goal 1, and we're really not far from that, could be this season. The things that have to happen are:
1. Mayo has to execute at a high level as HC. Make the right decisions come cutdown time, create the right tone, make the right...
Mac and Justin Fields are both examples of a team mis-managing a resource. Both would probably have been much more successful with a team going in the right direction - e.g., a Minnesota.
Our first pick has to be, and will be, a QB. It would be ridiculous to own the #3 pick, be QB needy in a class of 6 legit candidates that could all go in round 1, and not take one of them.
The decision isn't whether to take a QB with our first pick, it's whether to trade it down to 4-5-6-11-13...
I think he's gonna help this year. With his experience, versatility and athleticism he could be more valuable in 2024 than almost anyone we might draft.
It could be more the case that they're neutral among say 3 different guys - would be happy with any of the 3. Which is usually the reason behind any trade-down. If there's a guy available at your pick who's the best on your board, and in your area of need, you pick him. If there's several that...
If he's speaking the truth, it's saying that Penix or Nix are on the same level as Maye-Daniels-McCarthy. But at this point, GM's rarely speak the truth.
