Thuney trade value now lessened as new team cannot extend him until post season. A huge risk diminishing his trade value.

I agree with the open market, ie like his value in a draft pick trade. But if they trade him for ANOTHER guy in a similar situation, then his value remains the same.

That being said, I looked over a list of players who are currently franchised and unsigned to extensions and one name popped off that list. And if truth be told, if I had done a modicum of research before I wrote the OP, I would have never suggested a Thuney-Ngakoue trade, but rather a much BETTER option. That being a Thuney - Leonard Williams trade. Better position fit. Better player. Better size. More upside.

Given that BB had Snacks in just recently I think it is at least plausible to think something might still happen on the DT front. Harrison, Dareus and Jernigan are still FA. Certainly not on the same level as Williams at this point but for him you'd have to allocate 16M. With the former you'd be able to squeeze out two seasons for less than half of that.

Yes, but its not just about the money. Harrison and Williams are an apples and oranges comparison as players. One is a solid one dimensional run stopper, the other is an explosive game changer and well worth the trade of Thuney.

That being said, the addition of Harrison is more in keeping with a BB move given that Williams would likely be a one and done with the team, but it is just as likely so is Thuney.

Is adding Williams 4-5x the value of adding Harrison or Dareus into our defense ? Williams is unquestionably more flexible but is that added dimension worth paying that much more ?

Thuney being here or not is irrelevant for this question.

Well that's the obvious answer. But either trade would be a one year consideration, and I think for an extra 2 or 3 Million on the cap trading Thuney straight up for Williams would improve the Pats defense more than it would weaken the OL. Well worth the trade even if it is only a one year stop gap.

Now that being said, I don't think the Pats will trade Thuney for a draft pick the value just won't be there, given that they will get a 3rd round comp for him if they do nothing.

If the Pats aren't going to pay Thuney market price they won't pay Yannick either, so you lose one either way. Williams has potential but is inconsistent and will want big bucks also. How about Mike Daniels and Jabaal Sheard?
