Could Edelman be on the move?

Makes sense as slot receivers don't generally do great if your QB isn't Tom Brady. At least he can go to a decent QB in Stafford.

.

News of the Randy Moss deal to Minnesota broke when Simmons mistakenly tweeted it out. I wouldn't doubt this for a minute if the return is decent.

If that happens I hope Edelman refuses to play and gets cut

then reunites with the GOAT in Tampa

Welker with Brady in 2007: 112 catches
Welker with Cassel in 2008: 111 catches

The difference being that with Moss there were clear signs that something was terribly, terribly wrong.

ETA: Trading Edelman would be pretty strong evidence, everything else to the contrary, that the Patriots plan to tank.

The Lions have basically turned into Pats 2.0. Well minus the winning and living in a worse city of course.

I don't think Edelman would be moved to Detroit though. Shouldn't the Lions be looking to get as young as possible?

If you read the article, the Detroit guy dumps cold water on this and ends with...

"unless the Lions are going to get rid of some of the 11 WR they already have on the roster"

I could see the Pats trading him to TB, but only if they get something tangible in return. Edelman is basically the second best player on the team behind Gilmore, if he goes, the tank is on!!

I think if Bill really feels like there’s no football this season I wouldn’t hesitate to send him off for a 3rd. Stock up on picks and come back the following year with over 100 million in cap.

What do you care where jules plays?

Patriots gonna do what is best for the Patriots.

That could be the craziest “BB is ready for everything” story of alltime.... can you imagine 31 teams getting ready for 2020 while BB loads up for 2021 ? Wild.

id be shocked if he hasn’t thought about that scenario.

Chaim Bloom concurs.
LA Dodgers less so

I don’t pretend I’m Bill Belichick so I actually like some of the players and care about what happens to them

I don't think an Edelman trade necessarily means tanking. He's already old in football years. Old enough that any year, including 2020, could be the cliff. I think if BB sees that decline coming, he would pull the trigger regardless of the context of the season.

Yeah that makes sense. Edelman has good trade value since he was Superbowl MVP just a year ago. Plus our WR/TE roster is stacked already and Edelman will only be competing for playtime and catches. By trading him we can get some draft capital and release some valuable cap space that we can use for our depleted secondary. Steve Belichick would appreciate a strong 5th CB behind Gilmore, J McCourty, Jonathan Jones and J C Jackson. I know we just invested a 2nd round pick last year (Joejuan Williams) for that 5th CB but Steve would appreciate a bit more help and competition for it.

A whole lot of sarcasm, but no real points.

Most of the speculation has been revolving around Tampa trading for Edelman but I think that a James White trade to TB is more likely. Nobody can do what White does on the roster currently but the patriots have some depth at RB and can use a mid round pick on a pass catching RB. Damien Harris also has three down potential and I suspect that they will give in a shot to play a big role this year.

White put up good numbers again as a pass catcher last year so he should still have some value, but may have peaked already. Arians specifically said that adding third down back is a priority this off-season, not a slot WR. They could draft one but giving Brady a vet with whom he is comfortable makes much more sense.

People here would hate that move, perhaps even me, but it does make sense on some level. White is approaching the age where running backs lose their effectiveness (although being a third down back could increase his longevity). By the time the rest of our roster gets back up to Super Bowl standards, he could be well into his 30s and past his usefulness.

Time for them to move on from Edelman.

I love Jules. Because I do I wish he’d retire before he gets his bell rung any more times. I worry about CTE being in his future already.
