If Patriots + Mayo agreed to the exact type of deal that Wilfork received in March of 2014 the Pats would create over 4m in cap space for the 2015 season.

I'm confused. Are you suggesting NLTBE or LTBE incentives? You mention "if all LTBE incentives reached" at the end. I thought LTBE incentives counted against the current year's cap.

Should be "all NLTBE incentives"

Should be "all NLTBE incentives"

So technically it's saving about $500K outright, and moving about $3.5M in NLTBE incentives, which will either not be earned or (if earned) count against 2016's cap?

Correct.

Would this, assuming he reached the NLTBEs have a large negative impact on the 2016 cap?
In other words, while we gain a big savings if he is injured again, if he is healthy aren't we just doubling up the hits the following year, as the NLTBE that were earned get charged to 2016 PLUS become LTBE for 2016?

Yes. If the Patriots kept the incentives for 2016. In Wilfork's case the only incentive that carried over into 2015 was the 70% playing-time incentive plus a division round appearance.

Interesting, thanks for the reply

I should note that $4.5 million of Mayo's 2015 $6.25 million salary is guaranteed for injury-only.

I really want Mayo to come back next year, that lb Corp would be the best in the game. Hopefully the pats and mayo can work out a deal like this one

After a rough start Vollmer was as good as there is at RT.

EDIT: Sorry not sure how this got here I was replying to the All Pro team. System glitch vs mental error.......

Anyway thanks for the info.

How does the injury guarantee work? If his plyaing ability is diminished due to injury can he say that his salary is guaranteed due to injury guarantee?

He has to pass a physical in order to be considered healthy. A player has to be able to play football.

I see. Maybe. So if he "passes a physical" but isn't as fast or quick or "the same" since his injury (which happens in patellar tendon cases supposedly), the guarantee isn't triggered?

He has to play a physical and be able to play football. It is not required to be able to play football as well as you did in the past

Mayo's 2015 cap no=10.2875m
Dead money If cut while healthy=6m
minus salary of replacement Top 51 player 510K
results in a net cap savings=$3,777,500

Net cap savings if Mayo and Patriots reach a Wilfork-type deal = $4,016,667. $4,016,667 is more than $3,777,500 and Mayo is on the Patriots 2015 roster.

Updated picture.

Are we totally expecting a restructure? What are odds pats keep him at the 10M cap number?

Depends on what the Patriots can do in the draft. I think we can expect the Patriots to pick two or three OL again in 2015 to see if they can add another impact lineman. After that I expect LB to be a priority due to 1) Casillas and Ayers becoming free agents, 2) lack of depth, and 3) Mayo's unreliability due to injuries that are taking a toll. I'm sad about that, but it's a reality. Mayo is the Patriots' defensive version of Gronk.

Re-signing Akeem Ayers is a priority in the off-season. Re-structuring Mayo's contract can wait until after the draft.

Yes, I am expecting a restructure. Pats can NOT afford to keep Mayo at that 10m cap number.

pats need to create cap space well before the draft
