'Dislike' vote?

Hi Ian,

Not sure if this was requested or considered before: similar to the 'like' button in every post, is it possible to have a 'Don't Like' or 'Dislike' option?

just make the dislikes blind. just a count. then no hard feelings.

we get enough posts trying to volunteer threads to the practice squad; what is the difference.

We used to have something like thumbs up and thumbs down. The board survived. The only nasty issue here was Ian's way too slow response in kicking NEM off the board.

Hmm...Maybe I am missing your point. How would a mere vote get the board nasty when people already have the option to write anything in response?

We are talking about a quick option button for people who don't want to take the time to write out a response to a particular post that they don't like or is plain foolish. If we have the option to quickly cast a vote for 'like', why not something that also conveys our 'dislike'?

I understand we can rate the entire thread as 'terrible' but I am talking about individual posts. I don't have to 'ignore' a poster just because he/she makes some invalid points but I can let them know by a single click that I didn't like a particular post.

It is Ian's call and this was just a suggestion.

PS: I am sure you would have liked to have a 'dislike' button for this post.

Edit: After reading the above two responses, I see where you come from. But then, both responses had excellent suggestions: either keep the ID of the voter blind or just have thumbs up/down.

I don't think this helpful, really. A dislike or thumbs down is more ambiguous than the like button. A like prevents redundant posts or the old "bump" nonsense.

A dislike or thumbs down doesn't explain what you do not like in a post or what you think is factually wrong. A bit of back and forth is better than getting a "dislike" that just discourages posting at all. Or it could mean you went to Duke and you are just wrong about everything.

I prefer getting shot down hard with an explanation over getting some vague "dislike" affixed to my all-knowing and infallible posts.

Understood and you make a fine point. Objective was not discourage people going back and forth, especially on debatable issues/points that a more experienced poster will rebut with facts and better analysis.

My objective was purely to give a quick option to those readers who don't want to write to a specific post (especially those that deride other posters and contain inflammatory stuff) but still want to express their opinion on what they think of it.

And, knowledge of others opinion might allow the poster to gain some insight.

In any case, this is probably my last post on this thread. Wanted to check the opinions of others and have no intent extending it unnecessarily. Thanks to those who chimed in.

A simple "dislike" button would take some of the sting away from some of the responses. For that matter, it would probably allow some people who don't want to get into a back-and-forth to express their opinion when they would otherwise refrain.

I'm sure the number of "dislike" buttons that would be pushed in response to some of my posts would end up quite high, but I think I can handle it.
