NFL looking at overtime rules

ProFootballTalk.com - NFL HAS LOOKED AND WILL CONTINUE TO LOOK AT OVERTIME RULE

Who didn't see this coming in light of the Colts losing in OT.

I don't care for the overtime rules myself but there's no way they look at the rule if the Colts win the toss and get the FG, no way in hell.

I laughed when someone suggested this would happen, but I have to admit this is rather odd.

Of course, a coin flip may have kept the Patriots out of the playoffs by costing them a tremendous comeback win against the Jets (debateable I know, given the 3rd and 15, blah blah blah). You could just as easily say Kraft played a part in this as you could Polian / The Colts.

I posted this on PFT, but I will post it here too.

I also hear that the rules committee is looking to implement a rule that if you continually get over 10 wins every year and choke in the first round of the playoffs virtually every year, you automatically get a bye to the Super Bowl the following year.

The rules are going to be changed so that if a team has a

member on the rules committee, that team always receives the

kickoff in overtime.

Kraft doesn't have a history of getting rules changed as a direct result of his own team's misfortune.

Don't they talk about this every year? I hate the OT rule and hated it long before the Colts lost to the Chargers.

The NFL should adopt the college rules with regard to overtime.

They should adopt a 15-minute quarter and whoever leads at the end wins.

I feel even the current NFL system is better then the college system's amateur backyard football type of deal.

Plus that would crazily inflate so many stats.

They should adopt a 15-minute quarter and whoever leads at the end wins.

Players wouldn't want that and neither would I.

They would be taking such a physical toll on their body.

Stick with the 15 minute quarter, but guarantee each team equal possesions until the quarter ends. If the team that gets the kickoff scores then they kick off as normal to the other team. Then that team must score either to tie the game ensuring another round of possesions or to win the game.

Its fair and its practical. It would be a mix of the current OT rules with a repeat of the fourth quarter. Play until either the clock ends or one team has more points than the other after a round of possesions.

That's always been my ideal as well.

Better two 7:30 periods with alternating kickoffs/sides, if after the first they are still tied, go to the second.

The two things the NFL and the TV networks don't want are tie games and games that go longer than 3 hours. Sudden death has almost completely eliminated ties and it keeps the game as close to 3 hours as an overtime game can be.

In other words, the system probably isn't going to be changing.

Move the kickoff back 10 yards to where it was. Overtime was a 50/50 proposition at that point.

Now its 60/40, which is ridiculous.

The problem is that players give all to play 60 minutes. When tired, injuries happen, so you want to limit the OT, while still insuring each has a possesion.

Two mini-periods with a kickoff to the other team as at half time, guarantees a possesion for both even with the mini-periods. IMHO, the question is how short to make them. I would suggest no more than 2.5 minute mini-periods and a total of 5 minutes of overtime. Call it a tie afterward, except do it again in the Playoffs. :)

I see your point, but what difference does it make if you play for 15 minutes or two 7:30 quarters? As it is now, they play either 15 minutes or until someone scores. Adding in a guaranteed possesion for the other team is no guarantee of a longer quarter per say or at least significantly prolonging the game. But it does change the mindset of the coaches a bit and it allows both teams to have a shot.

Here's how I think the OT Should work. It should be a 15 minute sudden death continuation of the game as it is being played in the 4th.

So if you have the ball with 2 mins left and drive down field to kick a game tying FG as time expires, you are kicking off in the 5th quarter, just as you would in the transition of the 3rd to 4th quarter.

This will create the need for tons of new strategy at the end of games. Do you go for the game winning drive late, or do you just try to move the ball down field far enough to take the Game to OT? Do you call time outs when the other team has the ball with 2 mins left in a tie game, hoping you can get them to Punt on 4th down at the begining of Qrt 5?

I do however like the Sudden Death, that makes it stressful and that's fun.

What sux, is when a team drives the field, kicks the FG late, ties the game as time expires, then wins the coin toss and gets the ball with momentum. They should be Kicking Off, and the Return team should have the ball, just like the other 60 mins of the game. I hate the coin toss. Let them play it out on the field same as they would the rest of the game.

Also if its a tie game, and you have the ball at your own 20, instead of "playing for OT" as some coaches do, by calling a run play on 1st down, it'll force them to be more aggressive, cause if you don't get yards, me as the coach for Defense, I'm going to call a Time Out and hope to force you to Punt the ball back to me.

This is the idea I've always favored. The downside is that offenses (particularly field goal kickers) have gained an advantage over the years, so it still likely won't be 50-50, but it should get to at least 55-45.

One other tweak I've thought about is to only bring the ball out to the 15 for a touchback. I think the offense getting the ball around the 15 is truly about a 50-50 proposition.

You do realize that this rule would give an even greater advantage to the trailing team that is catching up, don't you? Instead of kicking the field goal as time expires, they simply kick the field goal with a few seconds left on the clock and kick off to the other team. Of course, the other team would want to fumble the ball back so that they would get the kickoff in OT, but then the kicking off team wouldn't want to recover it, etc. Talk about making a travesty of a football game...
