2005 NFL DRAFT NOTES & TRENDS:
The first NFL Draft was held in 1936, and a total of 1,634 players have been taken in the first round.
Only three players who were drafted #1 overall have gone on to be named MVP of the Super Bowl... all three have been quarterbacks... Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh)... Troy Aikman (Dallas) and John Elway (Denver).
The #1 overall pick has been traded a total of 13 times since the draft was first held. The last time it happened was 2001, as it was dealt from San Diego to Atlanta in 2001... last year would not count in this scenario, as San Diego actually made the selection of Eli Manning first before dealing him to the NY Giants... San Francisco actually dealt the #1 overall selection in 1979 to the Buffalo Bills who selected linebacker Tom Cousineau... Tampa Bay is the only team to ever deal the #1 overall selection more than once, as they did it in 1978 and 1984.
Quarterbacks have been selected #1 overall in each of the past four years, Atlanta's Michael Vick (2001), Houston's David Carr (2002), Cincinnati's Carson Palmer (2003) and NY Giants' Eli Manning (2004)... and a quarterback has been chosen #1 overall in a total of 25 NFL Drafts. The 25 previous quarterbacks taken #1 overall have played in a total of 42 Pro Bowls, although 10 of those selections went to John Elway (Denver).
Quarterbacks have been selected #1 overall and #2 overall a total of five times, the most recent was 1999 when Cleveland took Tim Couch, Philadelphia took Donovan McNabb and then Cincinnati even grabbed a third QB, Akili Smith.
Last time a player from California was the #1 pick in the draft was QB Steve Bartkowski (Atlanta, 1975).
The highest player ever drafted out of Utah was Carolina OT Jordan Gross (#8, 2003).
Last time a running back was taken #1 overall was Ki-Jana Carter (Cincinnati, 1995), the last Auburn running back to be taken #1 overall was Bo Jackson (Tampa Bay, 1986) in case either Auburn RB Ronnie Brown or Carnell Williams are taken #1 overall.
Last time a wide receiver was taken #1 overall was Keyshawn Johnson (NY Jets, 1996)... San Francisco actually drafted a wide receiver #1 overall, as Dave Parks was taken #1 overall by the 49ers in the 1964 draft.
Last PAC-10 quarterback to be drafted #1 overall was Cincinnati's Carson Palmer (USC) in 2003, while no Mountain West Conference (Alex Smith, Utah, QB) signal caller has ever been drafted #1 overall... a PAC-10 players has been taken with the #1 overall pick 13 times and 8 of those 13 players have been quarterbacks.
Last SEC player to be drafted #1 overall was NY Giants' Eli Manning (2004) in case Auburn running back Ronnie Brown is taken first this year... an SEC player has been taken with the #1 overall pick 14 times.
Last Big Ten player to be drafted #1 overall was Denver DE Courtney Brown (Cleveland, 2000) in case Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards is taken first this year... a Big Ten player has been taken with the #1 overall pick 9 times.
Highest a Michigan wide receiver has even been drafted was David Terrell (Chicago, #8) in the 2001 NFL Draft... in case Michigan WR Braylon Edwards is taken in the Top-5 picks this year.
Last time players from the same school were drafted with consecutive Top-10 picks were Buffalo OT Mike Williams (Texas, #4) and San Diego CB Quentin Jammer (Texas, #5) in 2002... and no team has had back-to-back Top-10 picks who played the same college position, since Alabama DE John Copeland (Cincinnati, #5) and DE Eric Curry (Tampa Bay #6) were taken in 1993... in case Auburn RB's Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams go back to back this year.
Over the last four NFL Drafts a total of 127 players have been selected... 69 have been offensive players, while 58 have been defensive players.
The #1 overall selection has been used most often on both quarterbacks (23 times) and running backs (23 times)... defensive lineman (11 times)... wide receiver (3 times)... offensive lineman (3 times)... linebacker (3 times).
When either RB Cedric Benson or LB Derrick Johnson are selected in the first round, it will mark the 68th straight draft that at least one player from the University of Texas has been selected in the NFL Draft.
Most players (in a seven round draft) ever taken from one school was 11, as the Miami Hurricanes had a total of 11 players drafted in the 2002 NFL Draft.
There have been eight NFL Drafts where no quarterbacks were selected in the first round, the last being 1996.

Alabama senior offensive guard EVAN MATHIS is related (nephew) to former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman BOB BAUMHOWER, who was drafted in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft.
Connecticut senior defensive end TYLER KING is related (son) to former New England Patriots linebacker STEVE KING, who played from 1973 and 1981.
Florida State senior defensive tackle TRAVIS JOHNSON is related (cousins) to Oakland Raiders running back JUSTIN FARGAS (USC), who was a third round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft.
Former Florida State quarterback ADRIAN MCPHERSON and Nebraska junior cornerback/return man FABIAN WASHINGTON are cousins.
Indiana senior wide receiver COURTNEY ROBY is related (cousin) to former Miami Dolphins punter REGGIE ROBY, who passed away earlier this year.
Minnesota junior running back MARION BARBER III is related (son) to former NY Jets running back MARION BARBER.
Ohio State senior defensive back DUSTIN FOX is related (brother) to former Indianapolis Colts defensive back DEREK FOX.
Stanford senior cornerback STANLEY WILSON is related (son) to former Cincinnati Bengals fullback STANLEY WILSON, Sr.
Tennessee senior offensive lineman MICHAEL MUNOZ is related (son) to former Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle ANTHONY MUNOZ, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1998.
USC junior linebacker LOFA TATUPU is related (son) to former New England Patriots fullback MOSI TATUPU.
Utah senior offensive guard CHRIS KEMOEATU is related (brother) to Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle MAAKE KEMOEATU.
Washington senior fullback ZACH TUIASOSOPO is related (brother) to Oakland Raiders quarterback MARQUES TUIASOSOPO.
HOW DO YOU FIND A FRANCHISE RUNNING BACK?:
An interesting note when you research how high the Top-3 running backs in this year's NFL Draft, Auburn's Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams, and Texas' Cedric Benson, should be taken... of the 29 current starting running backs, minus Arizona, Miami and Tampa Bay, who are likely to draft a new starter in the upcoming draft... 19 of the current 29 starting RBs were selected in the second round or later, including one premier back, Kansas City's Priest Holmes, who was signed as a priortiy free agent... here is a breakdown of how some of the league's current starting backs were obtained: Curtis Martin (NYJ - 2nd), Corey Dillon (NE - 2nd), Rudi Johnson (CIN - 4th), Duce Staley (PIT - 3rd), Lee Suggs (CLE - 4th), Dominick Davis (HOU - 3rd), Chris Brown (TN - 3rd), LaMont Jordan (OAK - 2nd), Tatum Bell (DEN - 2nd), Priest Holmes (KC - PFA), Brian Westbrook (PHI - 3rd), Tiki Barber (NYG - 2nd), Clinton Portis (WAS - 2nd), Julius Jones (DAL - 3rd), Ahman Green (GB - 3rd), Stephen Davis (CAR - 4th), Kevan Barlow (SF - 3rd).
