On Tuesday, the New England Patriots announced that former defensive back and tight end Tom Stephens had passed away at the age of 82 at his home in Naples, Florida.

Stephens, an original member of the Boston Patriots, was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 11th round (132nd overall) of the 1959 NFL Draft, but signed with the Boston Patriots in 1960 as an original member in the franchise’s inaugural season.

Stephens NFL career would last five seasons in New England between 1960-1964, he appeared in 49 games on both sides of the ball as a tight end and defensive back.

During his tenure, Stephens compiled 41 receptions for 506 yards and five touchdowns.

After retiring from the NFL, Stephens became a football coach at Harvard University, followed by a head coaching stint at Curry College in Milton MA, where he would spend 23 years as the Athletic Director. He was inducted into the Curry College Hall of Fame In 1995.

Stephens is survived by his wife, Lonnie, and his two children, Lynda and Thomas. Visitation is Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Solimine Funeral Home in Lynne, Massachusetts. The funeral service is Friday at 11 a.m. in the Nahant Village Church in Nahant, Massachusetts.
