It was bizarre. I can only assume that Materazzi said something really insulting. Even so, it was an unbelievably stupid thing to do.

He was probably frustrated from being molested most of the game. He was way out of line though, he should have known better and kept his cool.

However, that red card was one of the most entertaining I've seen. He head-butted him like a dinosaur and completely flattened the guy.

Does anyone have a link to a video of what he did ? I'd like to see it but don't want to watch world cup highlights forever to see it.

It was straight into the chest. A true "Glasgow kiss" is head to head (and really does damage). Zidane's was blatant, extraordinarily stupid but basically harmless.

That was the greatest headbutt of all time. The guy went flying back about 5 feet. I think Zidane has a career on the UFC waiting for him.

The 2 were talking crap back and forth. Then Zidane gets ahead a few feet, slows down and says soemthing. Then he gets ahead about 5-8 feet, something is said...and he makes a quick 180...glaring eyes and tremendous head butt to the chest....wow.

    I think so too.
It was so quick and powerful.
The guy FLEW. He got destroyed.

Right before this happened I was telling a friend I thought Zidane looked like Mark Messier. Too bad that's where the similarities ended.

They look similar, but Zidane's a class act (THE class act) of soccer who obviously needed something ridiculous to set him off. I hate Messier (and Pavel Bure) with a personal passion, and Zidane is better in every way than him.

Something really nasty had to have been said to set him off like that. I bet it had something to do with his Algerian background.

I didn't know Zidane was considered 'THE' class act. Hmmmmm this is really weird.

Now I'm starting to think the Italian player should feel embarassed for whatever it is he said.

What language do you suppose this conversation occurred in? French, Italian, or English? (I don't know how anyone else here feels, but it's satisfying to see the French lose ... Hate seeing them get the chance to brag about anything.)

My guess is something to do with Islam and Al-Quaeda.

Materazzi has a pretty nasty record and Zidane has been a class act, as you say. Zidane used to play in Italy, so Italian would do fine.

I don't know. I was rooting for Italy over France, but I wasn't satisfied with the way the game ended.

Also, I can admit that Italy in general played dirty/cheap throughout the tournament, maybe one of the 5 cheapest teams. Just way too many flops, holding jerseys, molesting players, etc. I thought that France played a much cleaner game.

Americans will never follow the World Cup en masse until the game is more honest and judicial. Italy won, but they won by taking advantage of the horrible rules and vulnerabilities of officiating of FIFA.

Materazzi imho could have said something bad to Zizou (probably in italian az Zidane playied many many years in Italy with excellent results).

but...c'mon...what a bad reaction from him...

a BIG mistake for one of the best players in soccer in many years...

i was allready thinking to say '' chapeau Zizou '' but now...

he put his team in the dark trouble...

the red was the minumum for the act
pity as i loved Zidane (excellent athlete)

I'm not going to argue this, because I'm much more of a casual football fan, but it's not like Zidane had never done anything like this before

"He did become the first Frenchman to be sent off in a World Cup finals, with a stamp on Saudi Arabia's captain when France began their home campaign in 1998, and in 2000 he incurred a five-match ban for two straight sendings-off in the Champions League, on for a headbutt on Hamburg's Jochen Kientz."

correct; but a player with his experience should not have nade a BIG mistake like that:

1 - in the WC soccer final
2 - in the LAST game of his amazing career

anyway: chapeau to Zidane; surely one of the best players in the soccer history

Agreed. It should be interesting to see if we ever find out what exactly was said. I've heard rumours about some of the extremely nasty and racist things that Materazzi might have said.

Radio 5 (a BBC news and sport station) and various papers here have reported that Materazzi allegedly called Zidane "the son of a terrorist wh*re". Radio 5 also report that Zidane allegedly started it by referring to Materazzi's dead mother. Make of all that what you will.

That Italian player sounds full of crap.

He claims 'I'm not cultured, I don't even know what an Islamic Terrorist is.'

I call BS. He probably said something way out of line.

Zidane's poster is on my wall in my office and will remain there. He has brought honor to the game. He still should be an inspiration for all kidswho strive to be the best they can be. All people have regrettable instances in their life...he should not be defined by this.

I think the public will define him by this but most soccer fans will not...soccer fans realize that soccer is such an intense game and things happen at times...sometimes the wrong time.

He'll remain on my wall with Ronaldo and Baggio and other smaller posters...where he belongs.

    Right.

Remember, this is soccer, where I heard the hooligans make monkey sounds at the Black players.

    Completely classless, some of them.
