I despise government interference in how people live their lives. My general rules is that if I want to do something that affects me and no one else, who do you think you are telling me I can't do it? I hate the government thinking it knows what is best for me more than I do. This means I tend to line up with Republicans far, far more often than Democrats.

However, in proof that politics makes for strange bedfellows, here is a topic where I am ashamed of the way Republicans have acted and my very best friend and ally is none other than.... <drumroll please>.... Barney Frank.

Rep. Frank gets Internet gambling law delayed for 6 months - The Boston Globe

Frank gets delay in law restricting Net casinos

WASHINGTON - Over the objections of gambling opponents in Congress, the Obama administration has granted a request by US Representative Barney Frank to delay a long-scheduled federal crackdown on illegal Internet poker and casino sites.

Frank sought the six-month reprieve so he could keep working on a pet issue: legalizing online gambling.

β€œI urged them to do it and I was very pleased,’’ the Newton Democrat said of the delay. β€œIt gives us a chance.’’

No offense to you, but I abhor both internet gambling AND Barney Frank.

If you can guarantee that no under-age kid will use his parents credit card to gamble online, then go for it. But, I MUST have that guarantee without any if's, and's or but's.

    Can you guarantee that?

Gambling is as much a problem in this country as drug & alcohol addiction. The last thing we need is online gambling. I've personally know 2 people who ruined their lives over some foolish obsession. And the last thing we need is our gov't's blessing to move forward with ONLINE gambling.

I've got an idea, let's legalize online drug & alcohol sales...

Sorry Pack....we disagree on this one buddy.

No, I can't. I also can't guarantee that no underage person will ever drive a car, have sex, buy porno, drink beer, etc, etc.

Besides, if Frank had his way then it would be legal to gamble with casinos located here in the United States, instead of the offshore sites we currently have to go with. Who would you trust more to check age and identification? A respected casino based in Nevada subject to the laws of the United States, or some casino no one has ever heard of based in Costa Rica?
But according to this logic, we should say that since some people abuse alcohol, it should be illegal for everyone.
Drugs are illegal, so I don't think we could legalize a store that sold an illegal product. But there are certainly stores that legally sell alcohol online. Those stores just tend to involve high end products like fine wine. It isn't really all that cost effective to order a 6-pack of Miller Lite from an online store.
Nothing wrong with 2 people disagreeing :)

    I don't get it.

Is the thread title supposed to be clever and funny or is it a misprint-brainfart of some sort?

No, but it should be illegal to buy alcohol online....Now, you say one can in fact purchase alcohol online. I've never heard of that, but I'll take your word for it.

I should say in the interest of complete disclosure that I don't know all the exact laws and restrictions. I am sure they vary from state to state and I doubt I could just order a half dozen kegs to be delivered to, say, a college dorm room. But I have purchased wine from a California vineyard in the past and had it delivered. :D

Where I come from, it's girls that like boys.

Anyway, my homophobia aside, I look at gambling like marijuana, I don't like them being legal but they're happening so much anyway that they might as well be legalized and let the government have their cut.

You can have crystal meth, heroin and puppy's tears delivered to your door if you find someone willing to engage in such a transaction. But as far as what you can do legally, that is another matter.

Absinthe is a different matter because it can legally be manufactured and sold in the U.S. as long as it leaves out the chemical ingredient (I forget what it is called) which makes it illegal. It would not be legal to sell absinthe with this ingredient. Keep in mind I am not saying people don't do it, I am just saying it isn't legal.

The best place to buy all the illegal things the Government says you can't have is your local school yard.

Gambling is legal, it's a matter of availability. Would society be better served by having it be more accessible. Revenue is great and we sure could use it at the rate we are going with spending. We don't need more revenue streams for a government whom has built it's own entitlement on spending. Maybe loosening up some gambling could be beneficial, but with our current recklessness in spending I personally would rather see them make do with less than find ways to get more.

PR, I think you're wrong here. To point to some impossible scenario where which a kid would take his parents credit card, and go online to gamble, is somewhat ludicris. Maybe we should ban wallets, or cash too, since a kid can simply steal one, or the other, from their parents, to do a number of things they're not old enough to legally do. How about we:

-> Ban car keys in homes that have kids without licenses.
-> Ban booze in homes where not everyone is 21.
-> Ban cable in homes with persons under 18, if it has access to R rated content.
-> Ban computers/internet access in homes with persons under the age of 18.
    Etc.
    Etc.
    Etc.

I think online gambling should be legal. Who the F is the gubmit to tell me what I can, and can't do with my money. I play poker online all the time, and who am I bothering? The Nanny state needs to die a quick death.

We might as well legalize everything we're getting close to the bottom of the pit anyway.

Personally, I'd like to all gambling made illegal....but that's just me. Went to Vegas for a work meeting and thought the place was a sewer. To me, it's a huge waste and represents the worst of America....

But like I said, that's just my opinion.

I think nanny state thinking has to die a quick death. We need to let consenting adults do as they please, as much as possible. Trying to "save the children!" every time some thing bad happens, is an infringement on the rights of everyday citizens. That's just my opinion. :D

Although I don't like nanny state BS either, I think you & I disagree on things like gov't regulation. But hey, that's why this is America! We can believe in different sheeit, ya know?
