I get tired of constantly hearing the following phrases from message board posters whenever anyone posts something optimistic:

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves...."

"Let's take it one game at a time..."

    ....

    Why not?

YOU ARE FANS, NOT PLAYERS. YOU HAVE NO BEARING ON THE ACTUAL RESULTS OF GAMES.

These are phrases that apply to players. You do not want PLAYERS getting ahead of themselves and having lofty expectations. You do not want PLAYERS getting complacent and getting swelled up heads.

As fans, you and I have every right to HOPE, WISH, or PREDICT whatever we want. We damn well can "get ahead of ourselves" as much as we'd like.

Contrary to popular belief, what we fans believe will have no bearing on the outcome of future games. All of the wishing, predictions of 16-0, accolades, etc in the world posted on this board won't hurt the Pats.

    We are fans, not players.

p.s. if I hear the word "no class" used in reference to another football player I'm going to have to throw up in my mouth.

I agree, I think superstition is a common illness for sports fans, especially in Boston.

As a fan, it doesn't matter what you think when you're watching the game, it doesn't matter what you say when you're watching the game, and there ain't no such thing as a curse.

That said, I don't want to get my own hopes up by imagining a 16-0 season, but I know it won't have any effect on the team one way or another.

It's after 4 games, not 14. Projecting out a 16 game undefeated season at this point is asinine as well as bad karma/a violation of superstition. And, as I've tried to get across to people before, player attitudes ARE impacted by fan attitudes. Players read the internet, they read newspapers, watch television and listen to radio. They get feedback at the bars and at the grocery store, and everywhere else they go.

    No Jersey Selected

This is a free country and a free messageboard. You can very well wish for the Pats winning the SB for the next forty years and plan the best victory parade for them for each year. Who is preventing you from planning and voicing your thoughts?

Since on any Sunday any 'poor' team can surprise the 'strong' team, a good % of the fans (me including) prefer to focus on the upcoming opponent for that week.

If someone writes "Let's not get ahead of ourselves...." or "Let's take it one game at a time...", I believe that they are just expressing their thoughts as opposed to coming down on others. If you think otherwise, it's time for you as fan to relax and not take seriously the postings of other fans. :)

"Contrary to popular belief, what we fans believe will have no bearing on the outcome of future games. " Wow! Really? :)

Superstition is just that, a superstition, ie, doesn't exsist. I can't stand people who are worried about "jinxing a team". Can't happen. The only way all the fans talk of 16-0 can hurt the team is if the players started listening to us and believing it. But that doesn't happen in BB camp.

THANK YOU. I know I just got on you in another thread but I agree 100% I'm so sick of all these little BB wannabees who think they're actually on the PATs and start spouting PATs cliches at us.

"The Pats schedule is this weekend at Cleveland, that's it."

"Let's take one game at a time"

"we gotta just prepare for this Sunday"

Oh really? what are you doing to prepare for this sunday other than washing your Bruschi jersey and walking your fat A down to pick up pizza?

Given that many superstitions have either been proven correct or have valid reasons behind them, you might want to re-think this. You may not get 7 years of bad luck for breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder, for example, but you can surely get hurt badly doing either one.

As for the "jinx", I"m always amazed at the inability of people to understand that mindset has a great deal to do with successful endeavors. As "Crash" Davis said in Bull Durham:

    Yes, PLAYER'S mindsets.

How does it affect the team if I look at the schedule and consider what their chances are against each team?

:D You brain surgeons ever think that some of us actually ENJOY watching, thinking about, and talking about one game at a time? And sometimes when a poster rolls out a Belichick-esque "one game at a time" post it's an attempt at humor and paying homage to our favorite coach? Come on newbs, it's been kind of a running joke around here for a while now.

By the way, do I actually think the Patriots will lose if I'm not wearing my lucky hat? No. Do I pretend to? Yeah. Just for the fun of it.

Dues, do you know how to read? You just proved my point. Superstition isn't real, but if you believe in it, it could change your ideas/actions. But we are talking about FANS, not players. How does fans belief in superstions, etc effect players that don't read it? Players can think what ever they want. If they fall victim to superstitious ideas, its their fault for being weak of mind. But as I already said, that doesn't happen in BB camp. Get real.

And if you think that the Pats players read this forum then you really have issues.

It doesn't. But, when millions of fans go around on forums and radio and tv, etc... and hype up a team, that mindset becomes contagious. That's why we have such expressions as "he was reading his own press clippings".

I try to enjoy the journey of the season. If your main focous is the SB, I think you'll miss a lot of the enjoyment of the season. Just my 2 cents.

How badly are we going to beat Cleveland? Or will Romeo have the perfect counterplan for the Pats?? Is Derek Anderson for real? Will Jamal Lewis run wild? I think that Cleveland is a second tier team at best, but we shouldn't underestimate them or an upset could be in the offing!

You keep thinking I proved your point. I'll keep realizing that you were wrong. And, I'll keep realizing it because I've been there, and spoken to others who've been there.

I might be a newb on this sight but I've been a PATs fan my whole life. And I can tell that some use it as a joke, as do I and I think the "humble pie" thing is hilarious. But some people actually think that's how they should be talking. And there's way too many "brain surgeons" who act like the 16-0 thing is too dumb for them to talk about because it's so far "down the road." nice moderation.

I prefer to maintain the "one game at a time" mind set. I find it much more enjoyable looking at each game as it comes and not worrying about the next game.

However, I do like to speculate on what will happen during the season.

I think it's my own way of keeping a level head about the team I love so much, and it prevents me from becoming an annoying, overbearing, bigmouthed say...RATS fan :D

So, because I am afraid of a player not being mature enough to focus on the task at hand...

Or the coaches lack the authority to reel guys in who might be "reading [their] own press clippings"...

I should never discuss anything but the next game on the schedule?

What I will grant you is that fans in the stadium certainly do have the ability to help players. If the people in the stadium are getting bored and shuffling out early because NE is winning big, or if the team is getting booed because they are only winning by a FG late, then you have a problem.

Other than that, you are reaching with this one.
