I agree that we should focus on the line, but there are some great WR in this draft and I can't imagine us having the cap room to get a ochocinco 2.0the year to draft a quality WR was 2014, unfortunately, it's in the books.
If the idea is bring a top tier receiver than we should target Vincent Jackson. It makes more sense than Andre Johnson or Fitz. The problem is that Tampa probably won't trade with us for a while to not look like fools again, they must have a BB picture in the wall with darts all over.
I insist we should go Jerry Jones (believe it or not) and keep improving the line, it's fundamental for Brady last year's to have a solid line protecting him. We already hit 2/3 in this last draft on day 3, that's already a great start.
This has been discussed quite a bit. I have Smelter in the 6th in my more recent mocks. Goodley might interest me as a late 3rd/early 4th option if he slips.
Cecil shorts on a bargin contract is the only player I see as a player I be happy with.Which gets me back to the question I've asked before - which ones? The list is not impressive. Maybe someone will be cut, but right now I don't see very many potential FA targets.
? The $3.6M is on the books regardless of whether Amendola is on the team next year or not. It clears up no cap space.
Cut Amendola and you have to replace him, as a kick returner, as depth behind Edelman in the slot, and as a 3rd WR. $2.1M in cap space doesn't buy a lot in today's WR market, and there aren't a lot of good targets out there. It certainly won't make a dent in anyone's Larry Fitzgerald/Andre Johnson fantasy scenarios.
The best case scenario that I can think of involves Amendola taking a cut to lower his cap hit and using that money, but I'm not sure there will be a ton of room to afford a WR.
If you go by the middle forty time on NFL Draft Scout which tends to be fairly accurate, Devin Funchess runs a 4.63 forty. Kelvin Benjamin ran a 4.61 at the combine. The lines are becoming pretty blurred between TEs and WRs these days. I maintain that a TE that never, or rarely, blocks inline is not a TE but a (very) tall slot receiver. Tim Wright is barely a TE to be frank. In fact of TEs that have run over a 100 routes this season, Tim Wright has the highest percentage of snaps taken in the slot.
And please don't take my comparison too closely - I was having some fun with some coincidences I spotted.
So Jared Stanger is a Seahawks writer that I and (I think) Mayo follow. Yesterday, on twitter, he said that there was a WR in this draft with near identical athleticism to Sammy Watkins. I guessed Tre McBride because I'd just been watching him and apparently I was right. So now I definitely recommend McBride to you all.
To be fair, he was comparing the athleticism, not necessarily the skill set and whilst Watkins had a good combine, it wasn't spectacular. I still really like McBride though, especially his body control. Add that to Watkins' athleticism and you have a genuine prospect. Know the only question is is whether he has the smarts for our offence.
Edit: Brief scouting report on McBride from small school specialists NFL Draft Diamonds. Ignore the reference to him as a junior, this was from last year.
If you are so sure that Smelter is an UDFA and has no chance of being drafted, why need it concern you that Mayo and I like him. And, as you are convinced he's an UDFA, I presume that means you have watched his games and aren't simply basing your views based upon a CBS ranking in December.
If he is on our board then this sounds to me like a good opportunity to use a sixth or seventh round pick. Why risk losing him to another team as UDFA.
Smelters torn acl late in the year probably relegates him to udfa. There are tons of talented wrs. Which among them can learn this offense?
Lockett might be a faster version of Amendola. Excellent receiver and return man. Wouldn't complain if we got him at 96, 97 or 102. Gonna come down to the dreaded 3-cone
It is now clear as crystal that you are a Major Rockhead and do not know what you are doing, regarding drafting... or team building...I don't know about the end of round 1, but I also feel that WR should be a very high priority,
right after LG & Pass-Rusher. I only wish that someone other than Bill and/or his D3 toadies
were making the pick, because it is now clear as crystal that the FO does not know what it is doing
regarding drafting WRs.
I may be in the minority, but I am not a big fan of this wr class. When I was looking at guys we might have a chance to grab I didn't see many that I could say without a doubt could push Amendola, Dobson, Tyms, or even Boyce off of the roster.
The only guy I am truly a fan of and can envision in this offense is Jaelen Strong. And I am intrigued by Phillip Dorsett who seems very similar to T.Y. Hilton.
