No way to tell if this is a possibility but he would be a solid replacement for Asante in case things don't work out. BB has always been high on this kid. Rumor: http://patriots.scout.com/?refid=1

Scouting info from ESPN:
"Antoine Winfield. CB
Born: June 24, 1977
5'9" 180 lbs.
Experience: 8 years

Winfield is smooth, strong and nasty. He is a playmaker and a game-changer. He is one of the league's most physical cornerbacks--and arguably one of the most aggressive corners ever. He plays much bigger than his size suggests. He takes excellent angles, gets tremendous jumps off the ball and always seems to be in the right position. He is an excellent open-field tackler who breaks down and wraps up. He has no weakness as a run defender. He plays with discipline and almost always is in control, despite his rare aggressiveness. He has excellent feet and hips, and he is very fluid in turn-and-run situations. He has an excellent short-area burst and can explode out of his turns. He plays with some swagger and isn't afraid to challenge receivers."

Some here have kicked that idea around a bit, it's going to take 6 parties to make this work, the Vikings, the Pats, Asante, Antoine, the NFLPA, and the NFL - and that ignores the potential for a three-way trade. There is about five weeks before training camp starts, we'll just have to hang loose and wait for developments.

While we're waiting, it's worth noting that the Pats secondary isn't in disarray over Asante's holdout (despite reports to the contrary from some of our black cloud brethren). Chad Scott started 9 games last season and this team made a good run into the playoffs. Blue is back and we'll get a chance to see how he is doing. The Pats have three of the four secondary "starters" back, and I'm confident a crew of Rodney, Geno, Ellis, and Chad.S can handle coverage duties behind the front seven.

For me the question would be, are the Vikings willing to pay big bucks to Assante? Not sure they are known for spending a lot on anyone, so why start now. These trades are great on paper, but may have problems when it comes down to the nitty gritty. I like the idea, but do not see how it will fly.

Antoine Winfield has decided to join the Vikings for their final week of OTAs after skipping most of the voluntary practices this summer.
Coach Brad Childress said he and Winfield improved their communication recently. Winfield reportedly wasn't happy with the direction of the franchise

doesnt seem to be going anywhere

He wouldn't be a solid replacement. He would be an upgrade!

What does the entire article talk about and has anyone seen it written anywhere else about a possible trade? Belichick has always spoke highly of Winfield.

Nothing too new there, just that the Patriots would like to sign Samuel, blah, blah, blah, Winfield would be a legit replacement but he's older, blah, blah, blah, nothing much that you or I couldn't have written and claimed to be an insider :)

Well it would make the situation more stable if we could trade for Winfield. His salary is 6M per year btw.
But the rumor doesn't seem to have legs yet.
Just speculation as far as I can tell.

Viking fans don't seem to think this trade will happen. Although an inordinate number of them also seem to hate the Patriots. :D
