re: Win, FAIL, or Meh? USA Today Draft special: Nick Perry, S Hill, A Dennard, L James

I'd be fine with Nick Perry...more than fine. This guy is the real deal and answer to the Patriots pass rush woes.

Hill I've been on record a lot as saying I just don't rate him because of the system he's been in. I would take this guy if he fell into our laps late second round and Belichick felt he interviewed well enough. At the same time however I think you could pick up a now healthy Greg Childs in the late rounds (a second round prospect at least without the injury) and get more out of him. The class is deep so a first round WR might not make any sense. However, if he's smart enough, he'll be the best WR to come out of the draft since potentially Randy Moss IMO...you just don't know! He could be the best prospect in years on his measurables...I just question his knowledge.

Dennard I love. He's a CB/Safety. CB is a slight need...I've been talking a while about bringing in someone like Trumaine Johnson or Alfonzo Dennard because, in a hybrid which needs quick, bulky players who can move around on the field, these guys have potential to play a little FS. I don't rate the ability of many of the Safeties in the draft to be an effective FS so I could live with a CB convert. Especially if it was one of these guys.

A RB will be selected in either rounds two or three. The sooner you come to face it the better. The Pats have some interest in some of the top prospects this year including Martin and Pead. Martin is down as an official visit as well...which suggests there's enough interest there if the board falls a certain way and one of those guys become available.

Two-rounder, no trades.

27. Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC
31. Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia
48. Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
62. LaMichael James, RB, Oregon

Fail

Nick Perry might be a great player going forward, but I don't see him as a fit for the Pats at all. He's about 30 lbs. lighter than any of the DE's we use in our 3/4, or our 4/3 historically, and in the post season drills he showed no aptitude that I could see playing with his hand off the ground.

Stephen Hill is a total development project. I can't see the value of a pick like this in the 1st round.

I like Denard. Not sure I like him at pick 48.

James is a good player, but I see him more in a specialist role. If we draft any RBs/ WRs, I would think it would be mostly for their return ability. Do you use a #62 for a returner?

Basically, we spend our first 2 picks on development players, who will only be situational players for the next few years. Then we make two picks of questionable value. Doesn't seem like a Patriot draft at all IMO.

Is there a link for this silliness?

Perry is definitely boom for me;)

I know how you feel about CBs, but Dennard has been viewed as a likely safety conversion where his tackling ability and middle of the field coverage skills will be best suited.

If he is drafted to play safety and he can play it well then I'd love the pick.

Fail.

If for some strange reason we didn't make any trades, the top 4 picks certainly have to be DE/OLB, DL, DB, and interior OL.
