Will Edelman become a Bam Childress preseason star who gets cut or a Wes Welker Jr.?

I see opinions from his spectacular play that some say he will be just another preseason star that gets cut like Bam Childress and some that say he is going to be a great slot receiver like Wes and resembles Welker a bit.

I would think that Mike Reiss says it best when he says that Edelman at this point with his performance in last nights game and TC has at least temporarily moved ahead of Lewis as the #4 WR and his play since drafted has moved him from being a likely cut to bypassing PS to the #4 slot... At this point that is,there are still 3 weeks for that to change but right now he looks solid.

And while I am on the topic of Lewis,Did he suit up last night?

Edelman was playing the ones and on every S/T from the outset. He's more established than Bam Childress ever was.

Was Bam ever that great in preseason I thought he only played with the second or third teams. Did he ever get to start with Brady ?

Edelman was playing the ones and on every S/T from the outset. He's more established than Bam Childress ever was.

That is true but I see,at least on this board a lot of love for Edelman at this time and it remonds me a lot of the fanfare that Childress got a few years ago. - I do think Edelman will make this team but I think Lewis will eventually gain the #4 and Edelman #5,I think Julian will skip the PS unless the team finds no room on the 53 roster

No way Edelmen makes it to the PS, somebody will take him from us if we cut him I think. As somebody who hasn't been to camp but has heard the reviews, when I saw his first catch, I honestly thought it was Welker out there until I saw an 11 instead of an 83, so I was impressed with Edelman as a pass catcher, throw in his return game as a bonus. Even if he is #4 and the punt returner, I would keep him active just so Welker doesn't take extra shots returning punts.

If the Patriots cut Edelman, they will have to settle for Nunn on

the practice squad. Edelman will be on some team's 53 man roster.

In one night, I became more impressed with Edelman than I ever was with Childress. In fact, I never fully understood the fascination with Childress. I just thought he was incredibly overrated.

If Edelman makes the team initially it will be because of special teams, which is why Welker got picked up and activated for Miami - he was a return specialist and even kicked field goals for them his first year.

Edelman's punt return and lack of fumbles last night went a ways towards that end. If he was on / looked decent on some coverage units he might have a roster spot.

It just shows you how unpredictable the preseason is when it comes to finding out which new player really has 'IT' and which player does not - Edelman qualifies for this type of guy we are looking closely at.

Michael Bishop and Bam Childress looked like versions of Montana and Rice and were busts when it came to showing their stuff in REAL games.

Matt Cassel looked the garbage in preseason and now he is a multi-milion dollar starting QB.

Players are so unpredictable that it must be mind draining trying to figure out who is going to continue on as a good player and those who are no more than a fantastic preseason 4 week wonder.

That's what I was wondering too if someone can answer. I don't even remember much about Bam. Did he have a special teams TD also? I highly doubt he was ever as impressive as Edelman was last night or I doubt he would have been cut, especially in 2006 when we had next to nothing at wideout.

I think Edelman already did more in this one game than Childress' best preseason outing so you might say that he has already surpassed Bam. While the resemblance to Welker is uncanny, I doubt he'll have Wes' production in his career.

His practices have been good...BUT

We've only seen one game from him.

It's all relative to all the other roster spots in ref. to him making the team.

Childress' preseason receiving totals were:

2005    6    66
2006    11    214
2007    7    82
2008    6    50    with Philadelphia

He was not a special teams standout but did return kickoffs and punts.

He got cut after Tim Dwight got healthy. And the Chargers tried to sneak him onto their practice squad.. To no avail.

Edleman is our 2009 utility player. He is well-worth a roster spot. He has played with the first unit. He returns well. I never though Childress deserved a roster spot.

And, I am a convert. I never thought he would would develop quickly enough to make the roster.

That being said, he hasn't made the roster yet.

OK, I remember Bishop playing well in the preseason, and Childress had some decent outings, but I would hardly say Bam ever looked like a beast during the preseason, and if I remember correctly he made most of his damage playing against backups. Honestly, I was among the posters who somewhat liked Childress, but I never thought he was anything spectacular. I simply thought he could help out back when the Patriots receiving corp featured a number of castoffs. Edelman just seems like a perfect fit for NE, and his overall athletic ability seems greater than Bam's ever was, but we'll see how things work out over the remainder of the preseason. I'll go on record as saying I highly doubt Edelman would ever make it to NE's practice squad if they were to cut him though.

I think the impressive thing with Julian is that not only did he impress early in camp but he has worked hard and improved what seemed like his early flaws and I think if he continues to improve he will definitely make the team even if it is miniscule because if shows continues progression one would have to wonder how much more he can improve when the bullets fly for real and after a full season and full offseason. Why would you give up on someone who has shown clear ability to improve with your (BBs) teaching?

Its funny how time changes perception, Thursday the big story was the return of The Dog Whipperer, but years down the road it may be best remembered as when Julian Edelman hit the ground running.

Just out of curiosity did anyone else get an email from the whitehouse asking me to help a nigerian prince get his fortune; and to support universal healthcare?
