Tonight on Comcast Sportsnet,, Michael Felger in discussing the Patriots OTA's with Tom Curran of NBC Sports claimed that Wilfork wants Seymour money. Wilfork, who is a regular on the show, communicated to Gary Tanguay, another anchor on the show, that he wanted $32 million over 4 years including $24 million in guaranteed money, according to Felger. With a DT franchise number of $6.0 million per, and Wilfork only being a two down player, Vince and the Pats are at an impasse.

Might explain why BB drafted (3) NT's this year.

If all he wanted was Seymour money, I would pay the man and do so in short order.

Wilfork claims the Pats said no to that amount.

Vince is going to get his fat ass franchised if he holds to that sort of dollar amount.

What was Seymour's, 5 @ 30 total? That seems to me more than fair in 2009 NFL for the best player at his position.

If that's all it would take to get it done, I say negotiation looks promising.

You can't play 3 nose tackles at once. There's a handful of top nose tackles, which means it's not real likely you'll get three starter quality ones in the draft.

Ted Washington is a free agent, which means not retired at 41. Want to bet somebody picks him up?

If you run a 3-4 and are lucky enough to have a young Vince Wilfork, you are beyond insane to give him up without a fight.

Besides #12, there aren't many on this team who I'd say are worth paying whatever they ask for (within reason, of course). IMHO, Vince is one of the few who is.

He probably won't sign for less than that and he shouldn't. He'll get much more than that on the open market.

    Re: Wilfork want Seymour money

No, it was 3 more @ $30... But he had a year left on his rookie deal that they kept so in effect it became 4 @ $32 total. And it was 2006 and their adjusted cap was $28M less than it is in 2009.

Not to mention I can't imagine any player telling Gary Tanguay his innermost secrets...

Completely agree. Pats have Wilfork for the next 2 years ( including franchise tag in 2010 ) for approx. $9 million total.

8 mil a year for vince is fair for both sides, you don't let the best young nt in the game go to another team. If this report is true then there's no reason why a deal should not be reached.

It's also worth mentioning that almost all tackles come from a 4-3 in college. Many, like Brace, project to a 3-4 nose in the pros. Many of these just can't or aren't willing to make that transition. Wilfork was pretty doubtful for a while.

Whether Brace is a back up, or future trade into the first round, it's a great pick. But he played in college next to a 330-350 lb. elite tackle. There's no guarantee he'll make it as a quality starter at the nose.

And what will we do if Wilfork threatens to sit out this season like Seymour did if he isn't given more money and a commitment of no 2010 franchise?

The franchise tag isn't an effective tool for a player you want long term. It can buy you time to negotiate, but it harbors ill will and isn't a way to keep a happy productive player.

If Vince wants to make a deal, we should be Monte Hall.:D

I agree. Wilfork is more valuable to the patriots than anyone not named Brady, by far.
