That's encouraging but it's early days. When contract talks come up, things can change very quickly

He gives the impression that he is happy here and he isn't seeking Haynesworth money. That's good for him and good for the team.

But he isn't stupid, they drafted two guys who could replace him. He sees the writing on the wall, if he wants to stay around and get big money from the Patriots he has to be tight lipped about his contract.

For some reason this reminds me of when Warren went through his contract talks.

The didn't draft two guys who could replace him. They didn't even draft one guy who could replace him. They drafted a guy who could rotate with him and back him up.

I feel for these players. Nothing they say is exactly right enough...

I hear you man, Wilfork sounds like a man who knows something will get worked out. This guy deserves the big contract hes going to get from the Pats.

I think this was exactly right enough. My BFF VW said the right thing, and he'll do the right thing.

VWs don't grow on trees, and we don't have close to a suitable replacement for him at this time.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

This year he is the backup, but next year he could be the replacement if/when Wilford moves on.

Mike Reiss and others are calling him "insurance" and a "fallback plan" so to me that is clear that they view him as a replacement for Wilfork.

Let's hope he can make the team. I think he's insurance in case Wilfork gets hurt.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

Sorry for the direct criticism, but "insurance" and"fallback plan" do not seem to me to be terms for replacement. They seem like terms that suggest a "worst comes to worst" situation.

I'll be watching this more than anything else as far as free agency goes. His play this year will be under heavy scrutiny from the organization and the fans. Brace's progress will also be closely monitored, I'm sure.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

Why doesn't everyone think Jarvis Green, Mike Wright and LeKevin Smith are "replacements'' for Seymour? They are good RESERVE players and emphasize reserve.

There has never been an adequate reserve for Wilfork since Traylor finally got old. Now we have and good RESERVE player, emphasize reserve, to back up Wilfork, and maybe in Pryor a PS guy too.

The Pats allocate 7 positions to the Defesnive Line. In the past few years they haven't had but 6 players that merited keeping. Now they do. After 9 years of team building Bill Belichick has finally completed the best 3-4 Defensive line in the league; and adequate reserves all they way. This line is young and will stay together for half decade. (Because BB will pay wahtever it takes, to keep it together):D:D

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

It's not what they want but it is a replacement situation, worst comes to worst with his contract. If he leaves they have someone who can replace him instead of having to draft someone or pay to bring in a veteran replacement from outside the system.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

Considering where Kansas City is on the CAP, having a backup plan is not a bad idea. The money they could offer VW or Sey will be enormous.

I would keep VW but one never knows.

I don't see it that way at all. I see them drafting for a back-up who can rotate with VW, and fill in if he happens to get hurt. I expect to see Vince Wilfork in Pats laundry for several more years.

The last part of your post is why we differ, I can see him leaving if the money isn't right for him. They prepared for him possibly leaving, even if they don't want him to.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

    Semantics.

The OP was talking about a guy who could replace Wilfork should Wilfork leave, not a player with WIlfork's exact skillsets.

They drafted Ron Brace. WIlfork rips up a knee in tc this year and Ron Brace or Mike Wright takes his place in the starting lineup.

    Call it what you will.

I would say that Brace would have replaced Wilfork.

So did Cassel replace Brady last year, or did he just allow us to survive the loss of an irreplaceable player about as well as could be expected, for the short term?

Wilfork is more replaceable than Tom, but I see a qualitatively similar effect in your scenario. We would be practicing damage control.

Re: Wilfork talks about contract, and Haynesworth..

The Patriots, time and time again, seem to be the only team with adults on the roster. Haynesworth wanted a big contract that made headlines in addition to getting paid. Vince (seems) to only care about money in his pocket; not his contract making headlines.

Vince, I'm sure, knows that Haynesworth's contract is unreasonable and will not play out over the whole 7 years.
