The Bucs 3rd pick would be a nice starting point.

Would a top-10 pick be considered a "value" pick by the Patriots, or not?

I read the article. They're kidding themselves if that's considered value for the Patriots.

Re: Wilfork says he wouldnt mind playing for the Bucs or Dolfoons.

Vince better be careful, he's still under contract.

I can't imagine anyone who cares about football willingly playing for Tampa.

But it may be a good idea to non exclusive tag the big guy and let him test his own market. I think he'd find it fairly limited in 2010 even absent draft compensation... Teams handing out double digit bonuses and guaranteed money heading into 2011 will be few and far between. There will be more teams dumping salary than adding massive amounts of it.

    I'd take Tampa's 2nd this year and a swap of 1's in 2011...:D

I agree. This is all speculation right now. When the free agent market opens thats when we will know whats going on!!!

Larger men would prefer the heat?

There's no way Vince is going to pick his own destination, worst case scenerio we tag him then ship him OUT of the divison and ideally, conference.

It goes on to say :

"Not sure that would be enough for Wilfork, but could be a starting point."

The #2 this year would be attractive - add in something next year and I'm all ears. MoLewisrocks idea of swapping #1s would be sick but probably not realistic - having the Raiders and Bucs #1s next year . . . :singing:

Completely agree. The Pats in are control of Vince and where he plays. He cannot pick where he goes.

The Pats and Vince will figure something out. He is too good of a player and Wilfork loves NE too much for the two sides not to come to some sort of agreement. This deal will get done, just give it time. Worst case scenario he is franchised.

The draft is a crapshoot while Wilfork is a PROVEN top player.

Well if you're talking Top 10, I trust Belichick to make the right pick.

He has both times (Seymour / Mayo)

As much as I like Vince I could be tempted if Tampa were to make a sweet offer.

Wilfork's contract is up. He's due to be a free agent. If that happens, he can pick his own destination and the Patriots will have no say in the matter.

The Pats are still in control of him with the use of the franchise tag. He is still property of the Patriots unless they dont slap the franchise tag on him or dont resign him, then he will become a free agent.

The only way we could ever get offers from other teams is if we franchised Wilfork. This was brought up with Tom E. Curran today and his franchise tag would carry over to the other team and he couldnt see a team offering a first rounder for him. He could see a 2nd and possibly a 4th. Definitely not worth it, just resign him.

getting picks is nice but young talent on good contracts is better imho. It's more certain. draft is hit and miss, doesn't matter where you pick really.

Imagine two top-10 picks in the 2011 draft. BB would be lynched if he traded out of them.

Didn't know the Globe did trade negotiations for the Pats. I am guessing that Belichick is not letting Wilfork go for less than a first. A first and a third if it it to the Dolphins.

No chance in hell BB would ever let Wilfork go to a team within the division

Re: Wilfork says he wouldnt mind playing for the Bucs or Dolfoons.

And the Pats would get two first round picks in compensation. Wilfork and the team signing him would have no say in that matter. So in other words, the Pats have a lot of say of where he goes because the team that acquires Wilfork would want to make a trade for Wilfork for less than 2 first round picks.

I agree. But if they give him a poison pill deal, the Pats may have no choice. Granted the Pats would have the Dolphins first round picks in 2010 and 2011.

The Patriots would get nothing in compensation other than a compensatory pick.

this is getting fun.......people who think the pats will fold their arms and have all the leverage in the world are bloated with kool-aid

the longer this drags out, the more the value will go down.....especially if it gegts to the point where the only way they get wilfork to show up on time is to promise no tag in 2011....the he will play it out and the pats will only get a 3rd rounder for him........if someone offers the pats a top 10 pick for him, they'd be idiots not to take it

they then go off and sign a guy like pickett, draft mcclain and oldrick in the first round, hughes in the 2nd round, and the defense is shiny and new

Re: Wilfork says he wouldnt mind playing for the Bucs or Dolfoons.

Really?!? Is this in the imaginary universe where the Pats forget to send in the franchise tender offer papers into the league? Or they decide to do what is best for Wilfork and let him leave without franchising him.

The only ways Wilfork leaves the Pats this year is either he is franchised and traded or the he is franchised and a team signs him and the Pats refuse to match the offer and the team just gives up two first round picks. Any other scenario isn't based in reality.

Re: Wilfork says he wouldnt mind playing for the Bucs or Dolfoons.

It all depends on what type of franchise player the Pats make him. There are 2 types.

    • An "exclusive" franchise player -- not free to sign with another club -- is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 16, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.

    • If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, he becomes a “non-exclusive” franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match

Well, the Pats have blown it. They should have already franchised and traded Wilfork in the past week. Even though the period for franchising Wilfork is three weeks away and the Pats cannot trade Wilfork until March 5th, his trade value is already diminishing and the Pats leverage is gone. The only thying they have left to do is not franchise him and let him be a free agent and hope his compensatory pick is a third rounder. That's the best they can do.
