Can someone tell me why a city would want to host an Olympic Games? For the life of me I've never been able to figure out why. I remember Menino wasting tens of millions of dollars trying to get Boston an Olympics, and for what? Massive traffic, massive debt, certain inconvenience, more corruption, increased taxes, etc. Can someone tell me what the net gain is for a city? Maybe if you want to put yourself on the map, as in some 3rd world nation looking to join the big boys, it might make sense. Not for an established city though.

Agreed. A very tired waste of time. An ego trip for established cities/nations. Would rather Rio get it this time. Even with their left-leaning president.

Well in some of your cronies are named Jarrett & Rezko and they are in real estate they could make a killing. Follow the dancing Obama's to see where the money is.

Not quite sure if I would even want to go to the olympics.. the only possible answer is for infrastructure stuff... many cities have benefitted from them being there Lake Placid, Calgary come to mind...

I predicted Rio would edge out Chicago in a close vote. Obviously I still think Rio will win, but I am very surprised that Chicago got bounced so early.

EDIT: Now they are saying Tokyo is out as well, so that pretty much cements it for Rio. 2012 is in London. No way they give 2016 to Madrid, which is just a stone's throw away when we look at things on a global scale.

You might have nailed it why the Obama crew jetted over to argue for Chi-town. Very sad to see it all boil down to lining the pockets of cronies. Not a good omen. My bet is on Rio or Tokyo.

Gonna be Rio. Brazil is rising and could use a shot in the arm. Besides, South America deserves a turn at this. But where are all the slums going to be moved to?

I thought Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Keith Richard, and Charlie fixed up all the slums there when they did their gig in 2006. :confused2:

Spare us the faux outrage, because I don't recall you ever getting butthurt at Bush spending a THIRD of his presidency on vacation. If I recall, each trip to Crawford cost ~200k a pop.

Yeah, well at least he went to Crawford and stayed there for a week or two. The Obama's act like they've won a 4-year fly-all-you-can ticket from the tax payers, the way they flit all over the universe. :nono:

They are getting over-exposed, too. The thrill is gone.

BArry put his prestige on the line and got punked by the IOC, the mullahs took note, what an amateur.

He didn't put anything on the line. He went and vouched for his city. The IOC, instead, decided to award it to a city on a continent that has NEVER hosted the Olympics before.

The Mullah's are noticing... seriously? You might want to dial back on the faux outrageometer, or else it's going to be a long seven plus years for you.

So you're saying it was appropriate for the POTUS to spend a third of his administration on vacation.

I'm sure if Obama had done the same thing, you'd be so forgiving :rolleyes::rolleyes:
