The New York Football Giants seemed to be able to get 15 yards down the middle of the field anytime they wanted to, especially early on. Why is that? Is it a personnel problem or was it the result of running so-called vanilla schemes?

That problem should be fixed early into the season. That being said what do people think of Mckenzie?
I watched him rough a back on the ground and get vocal, so that gives me hope he has somewhat of a mean streak in him.
I thought he looked hesitant to attack very submissive which is frustrating cause I believe he can evolve to a great piece for us in the rotation.
Although he looked unsure and more thinking than reacting what is everyones opinion?

he got planted and squashed by a Giant back-up OLman on their final TD on 3rd down at the 1....saw some good plays too...but hey...backups...doesn't really mean much except for teaching purposes...

Actually, that's pretty much what I'm asking. I don't really understand schemes very well, so I was wondering if it was scheme or sucking.

Stay away from pyramid schemes coming from Nigeria Patjew. They really suck.

So far this thread has involved being spread wide, BJ's, and sucking. I like the direction we are going !

    hahah.... I know.

I think it had to be a scheme thing that got exploited. Whatever it is it needs to be tightened up. But I think they looked a bit better. The corners at least. D-Mac in particular.

It starts with pressuring the QB. When you're not pressuring the QB, he has all day to pick you apart. Our rushing and or pressuring was non-existent tonight, and I believe it has been like that since Burgess returned to the lineup.

I am really hoping he gets cut this Saturday or is at least supplanted by either Ninko or Murrell (if he makes the roster). Burgess is just disappearing in our system, and I don't believe it's because he has been missing camp.

The second is that most of our players are not at the point where they are seeing plays before they happen (e.g. Rodney Harrison). Especially Mayo who sometimes gets into thinking too much on the field (Bruschi sort of was the same way until the 4th or 5th year of his career). Anticipation is a great factor, and can make all the difference in this "bend but don't break defense" where your first and second steps are the most important of any that you take on a down, especially when you are in zone coverage. You absolutely cannot play flat-footed, or off the back of your feet if you are a DB in the FB type defense.

This is another reason why we are so fortunate that BB has 35 years of experience in coaching, as opposed to McDaniels, out in Denver, who has just a few years. BB has seen and knows that it takes time for players to emerge and flourish, and because of that, is not going to change the system, is not going to give up on Mayo or our young backfield. They can only learn through reps. This new defense is all of one year old. Possibly this season, but definitely within the next two season, they will be a truly vaunted D.

Tonight, I saw a lot of one-gapping reaction. Players were just pulling up once they got blocked, instead of shedding and/or playing through the blocks.
And unlike the past few games, our run-stopping was terrible tonight. We could not contain the edges, and so you saw those bounce out run gains that opened up the passing game, especially on the first drive. That allowed the Giants offense to get into a rhythm. I have a feeling that once Brace is healthy he is going to get the starting nod at some point early in the season at LDE, because IIRC they were targeting the run there.

Thanks psycho, informative as always. I also remember alot of runs at the LDE.

Teams go through changes and I try not to get caught up thinking about the front 7 now vs. a few years ago. Sometimes it's hard not to.

It's definitely hard, especially if you were not a fan before the glory years of the 2000's. I am willing to bet that the majority of Patriots fans on here and everywhere else became fans "after the fact" so they've never seen a young team have to grow through trial and tribulation.

I held season tickets back in the late 70's til the new stadium was built...I used to go to EVERY game, especially when they were posting 2-14 seasons.Metal benches in pouring rain, lightning, Schaefer beer...you know...the good ol' days...

Yeah, I sat on cold bleachers, too and I wore a Pats shirt proudly in 1988 and 1994. I guess that A) I'm spoiled now, and B) I'm anxious because I don't want the TFB+BB window to close before they can put together a strong enough squad to make some more deep runs.

I never thought Bruschi would amount to anything much more than special teams...too small, too slow..etc etc

That's why I've sorta learned to keep my mouth shut until a reasonable amount of performance has been demonstrated.
