Ive spent some time in FL and especially southern florida and EVERYONE carries a gun with them, whether it be in a car or on their person. Its more the culture there than anything else so I think anyone who questions why he had a gun on him in the first place has no idea about the culture down there. Its the same thing with most of the southern states....they are all gun nuts down there.

Its like wondering why a person from Oklahoma speaks Y'all...its a non-issue

EXACTLY. First of all people here need to realize the the univresity of Miami isnt located in the safest of places. It wasnt so long ago that a player from that school was shot and killed. meriweather legally has the right to have a gun, Carry a gun and use it if put into a dangerous situation. who wouldnt make use of their gun if put in harms way. some people need to get over themselves.

They went out to check out a suspicious car outside their apartment and from the car came gunfire that hit his roommate. Had he not had the gun to defend himself, he might be dead...... End of story.

I don't think its a huge deal, but to say EVERYONE has a gun is just wrong. Have friends that either live or have lived in the Southern Florida/Miami area and none of them had a gun. BTW, the first thing that popped into my head when I read your post was someone's mom saying, "well, if everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you jump off too?"

I just hope he leaves his guns at home in Florida.

Not too many people from new england will realize just how normal legally owning a gun is down south. ALOT of southerners believe in the right to carry guns and they excersise that right. For many getting a gun license is right up there with getting a drivers license for a good amount of people. as a matter of fact I'll venture to assume that there are a lot of players on our "chior boy" patriots team that legally own guns and carry it with them. youd be naive not to think so.

Guns aside, the foot stomping was pretty gross behavior!

Was it as gross as when seymour stomped somebody.

    or

when Rodney Harrison yanks a receivers (reggie wayne) facemask towards him while the recievers momentum is going towards the ground.

or when vince wilfork body slams a runningback (leon washington) after the whistle was blown.

the fact is Im pretty sure we all cheered when it all happened. emotions do take over people and they make bad decision even our own guys. If it wasnt for the refs slowing the momentum in some intense situations with intentional ticky- tack penalties during the patriots titans game this year, you would have seen some "gross" behavior, RIGHT? meriweathers character is positively consistent if you ask me.

One need only to look at the response of the FL law enforcement where no charges were brought against Meriweather, as he was found to be using the gun legally.

Very different from his buddy Sean Taylor a couple years back when he formed his own armed lynch mob. He's still on probation and was lucky to avoid a prison term for that action.

Bottom line: while I don't have a problem with people who carry guns legally, Meriweather appears to have learned a lesson, as the rules are different now that he's become a recognizable pro athlete. There are any number of crazies who would love to take advantage of pro athlete celebrities. Adding a firearm to the mix, even legally, is a huge responsibility and not always an exercise in self preservation. The smart pro "celebrities" learn that a lifestyle change where you change your night-time hangouts and hangers-on is the preferable move to not changing and carrying a gun.

I'm from South Florida. And yes, most everyone carries a gun on them. Even me.

I don't have a big iussue with athletes having guns. Many of them are targets because of who they are. I just hope most use common sense when owning, some athletes think they are invulnerable. That midset and guns doesn't mix.

Edit: How many states in the New England area have concealed carry?

Just a slight correction. Yes, they did see a suspicious car outside, but the gun fire came from a bandanna wearing assailant who was outside their house (they didn't see him outside because he was hiding). After he confronted and shot Willie Cooper Meriweather pulled his gun out and shot at the assailant who started running, then the assailant jumped a fence, and got into the car (someone else was driving), and took off.

Whomever wrote that NBC Sports Article didn't represent the facts correctly.

I thought it was because he is a Patriot, if he was drafted by the Colts then he would be a low down scum bag.

That incident is ancient history, lets hope he can come in a and contribute this year so we forget about all this stuff.

Exactly. I carry concealed about 80% of the time... but I'm no pro athlete or famous person. I believe that he has the right to carry... and (much like our brothers int he south.... a good percentage of those up here in NH carry, as well) will prob. still keep his license current.... he just has more people that would try to use that against him than the rest of us do.

End of the day, he handled a situation entirely within the law of the US.... the gun issue to me is a non-issue.
