Why are we selling a billion dollars worth of weapons to the Saudis?

What is the rationale there? To me, this sounds like another arms deal we say in the 80s to Iraq.

Saudi Arabia is NOT a democracy, they do not have a free press, they do not have an elected government...

    WTF is going on?

Sure, selling these weapons will create another 40 years of sustained war and therefore more fleecing of the tax payer to the military industrial complex.

How they hell can we as a country be for this?

I think its 68 billion, it makes up for all the oil we buy from them. SA is also a counter balance to Iran.

Same exact argument gave with the weapon sales to Iraq... and look what happened.

So again, this is exactly why the rest of the world hates us, we, as in the USA, promote a policy of perpetual warfare in order to profit from it.

Also, I think the proper counter balance is Israel not Saudi Arabia.

Its Both. We were backing Saddam because he was at war with Iran. We wanted to see Iran go down, and it did.

The hypocrisy of ourselves is so damn sickening.

I don't hate America, but I can hate what we do sometimes... This just blows my mind.

Sadly, many people don't understand that distinction (or pretend not to).

    Traitor!

    :D

Wouldn't it be easier to simply drill our own supply, buy less oil from people who don't really like us, while simultaneously investing in a home grown alternative for the future, like hydrogen or something? Oh wait, that makes sense, so why would we bother doing something like that.

The sale of weapons has to do with power and who really controls this country.. while those in congress and in the white house seem to be, the real power lies amongst the military industrial complex and a select few corporatists.. there are puppets and puppet masters...

There is nothing that can be done to stop it.. Eisenhower warned us about it in 1961... and no politician wants to deal with it..

    Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

How can we have a military industry if we don't make anything anymore?

The Saudi's are arseholes, but so what? They have money, let their young people do the dying when it comes to dealing with Iran IMO. I support the idea of using our military to make the world a better place in some circumstances, but not if someone who's a lot more local than we are can do it instead.

Besides, we aren't selling them the real, state of the art stuff. Its not like our guys would ever have serious trouble facing what we're selling. The truely hot schit, vectored-thrust/stealth fighters that are close are only going to the Air Force.

    Exactly!

It is sweet. And when the OP said a billion dollars, I was thinkin' pfft. They've sold me more than th....nevermind, nothing to see here....

Seriously, one billion would have been little more than uni's, kevlar, some rifles and a few humvee's.

68 billion might have a toy or two.
