Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

The one good thing about this loss is that the mediots on Talk Radio, will have something to whine about besides Gronk's Jersey on the porn star, and the never ending Red Sox saga..

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

didnt Andre Carter...actually sack Roethlisberger a couple times?....I think our pass rush was decent
I actually think our pass rush was worse than our coverage. Especially comparatively when you watch how often Brady was harrassed (by our OL, which by most accounts is fairly good... although Vollmer was brutal, but that's another story lol).

If we bring 3 guys, or even 4, then it's to be expected that more often than not we aren't going to get through and it's on our back guys to hold up their end. But we're consistently bringing extra guys (and technically "blitzing") to absolutely no success at all. They're all blocked, and it's just point and shoot for Big Ben or whatever other QB.

I just do not understand why we can't blitz effectively, it's killing us. Our OLBs are atrocious at it, and the key to a good blitz, particularly when in the 3-4, is the outside rushers bringing pressure. Oh ya, and our future OLB pass-rushing savior (Cunningham)... he was a healthy scratch today, that tells you what you need to know about him lol...

time to bring back moss

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

What? This thread isn't sunshine, sprinkles and rainbows about this team? Prepare to be merged heretic!

Haha that gave me a laugh!

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

It might have been a one-score game, but we got beat pretty bad all-around.

And I'm not saying our defense doesn't deserve to be called out... it was bad. But look at it... I mean our secondary is disgustingly thin. It's about expectations... we all knew what was going to happen: A) we weren't going to get to the QB, as usual, and B) we were going to have pass-defense issues. And hey, both those were big problems. But in the end, we held them to 23 points... which (at least in my mind) should've been enough to win the game.

But on offense? Against a banged-up Steelers D AND with an extra week to prepare? That's just unacceptable.

I agree completely. Would it be nice for the D to hold teams to 17 or less pts, absolutely, but that isn't happening with this D. 23 pts should be sufficient for this O to score 24 or more. This O is built to score points and be difficult to stop ala the Colts of old. This was a complete team loss and the D had its issues on 3rd down and its inability to get off the field, that said the majority of the blame resides with the O and too many 3 and outs.

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

... I mean Pittsburgh didn't punt until their last possession...

That should tell you all you need to know.

You are right - the offense should be vilified for playing so poorly against a banged up Steeler D. And yet we are focusing our rage on the defense. Goes to show you exactly how putrid/inept the D was with 500 yards allowed, 40 mins TOP, 10/16 3rd down conversion (including crushing 3/12 & 3/15).

I've never undrstood why the posters on this board want to blame one unit or the other.

I never get down on the offense, because if they have a bad game, it's an anomaly and probably means Brady had his 1 out of every 10 games bad day. The defense, on the other hand, has not been a unit to have confidence in in over 5 years.

For as much as we rail on the D... the offense is responsible for both losses and the near loss in Dallas. We hold Pit to 23 (with a ridiculous time-of-possession deficit mind you) and just keep going 3-and-out and 3-and-out.

Yes the D was lacking still, I mean Pittsburgh didn't punt until their last possession... but we're used to this bend-don't-break style by now.

Like c'mon offense... Brady, O'Brien, and the rest of you... get it together. We're supposed to be a DOMINANT offense and we've sh*t the bed when it's counted on numerous occasions now.

You said it..they didn't punt until last possession..it's on the D

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

hopefully the offense will break the trend of scoring less points than the previous week.

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

When a team plays great man coverage and generates a pass rush up the middle, we have little to no chance of winning. There are 3 reasons why: 1) we don't have a clear #1 receiver that can stretch the field 2) No homerun threat at RB.
3) Our defense can not stop anyone. Our best chance of a stop is in the Red Area when we cant play 15 yards off the ball and the offense simply doesnt have the space. Overall talent on D is atrocious and seems to be getting worse each year.

Really? You blame the offense? Really?

I have posted this in another thread but i thought it was apt here as well.

This is not a comment on our value strategy which i agree with but rather the picks and how they have affected our, defense and WR.

(2) Butler, (2)Brace (so far but i hold out hope), (3) Crabble, (2) Wheatley, (1) Merriweather (debatable but i think the pats fan base new more than most he was not a good saftey, Not a bust just not a guy ou can build your D around), (2) Cunningham (For now even tho i personally thing he is a good OLB in a 3-4), (3) Brandon Tate, (3) Tyrone Mckenzie, (3)Kevin O'Connell, (3) Taylor price (TBD, even tho i think he has great potential. He still hasn't put it on the field)

Above are a list of players drafted in rounds 1-3 since 2007 that in my opinion have the patriots as a team in the position they are in now defensively. One 1st rounder, four 2nd rounders, Four 3rd rounders with one TBD.

In these picks you have 2 WR (hoping to be your deep threat), and 7 players on defense that have not worked out (TBD in some cases, Cunningham, brace). Now our value approach has let us be able to absorb these hits by hitting on some other picks to keep us competitive every year.

But if your asking yourself why is this D is not strong and why we can not stretch the field. The answer for you is above.

Now i don't mean this as a comment on the "value" strategy as i have stated i agree with it. It is a comment on the choices themselves and the result is games like today where our weaknesses are exposed by another Playoff bound team.

Do i think we can bring it all together? absolutely, i am a fan of this team and we have 2 GOAT in BB and TB. But we also can't pretend that this team doesn't have holes.

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

What ever happened to the 'benefits' of a bye-week?

In addition to players having a nice rest to recover from small injuries, aren't the bye-week team players and coaches supposed to have the luxury of having more time to prepare for various scenarios?

Maybe the 'bye-week benefits', along with with 'home games are easier to W than road games' and 'half-time adjustments', are big myths in as much as the Pats are concerned.

The offense T.O.P per drive doesn't help the defense

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

I'm curious to find out if this Pitt offense we saw today was cooked up this week or has been being worked on in increments all season ,looking towards today's contest. Roth threw the ball 51 times today...who saw THAT coming???...and not because Pitt was trailing...it was marked departure from the Steeler offense that has shown up every single game until today...just read the Steeler fans posts this past week...nobody saw Heath Miller making the amount of catches he did.

another thing that has been relatively undiscussed (biatched about) was the Hernandez factor...one catch for 9 yards???? Faulk with SIX catches??? I don't know about anybody else but I could definitely stand to see the ball in Hernandez's hands six times and Faulk, one.

Re: Why are we pissed at the defense? The offense is responsible vs. BUF, DAL, and t

In todays and Buffalo's game they are equally to blame.
The New England Patriots scored 31 points against the Buffalo Bills yet the offense is to blame? In addition, the New England Patriots were up 21-0 in the first half of the game. I didn't realize the New England Patriots offense needed to score on every possession for the team to win!

+1. Spot on observation and analysis on both sides of the ball.

If I was an opposing offense I would throw the ball every chance I got on this defense until they learn to stop it.
