Six corners seems an excessive use of roster space, given that we could certainly use the position elsewhere. I suspect that we need three corners and a backup, for a total of four. Certainly, we often carry five, if one is developmental or a top special teamer. Six is overkill. Two of the six will be inactive almost every game.

OPTION 1 - We are trying to trade Butler

OPTION 2 - The position is an illusion. It will be gone when we make another addition or two elsewhere.

OPTION 3 - One of the corners will play a major role at safety.

OPTION 4 - The corner position is so important that the extra insurance is needed.

OPTION 5 - One of the positions is being held by one of our kick returners.

OPTION 6 - Molden, a career s/ter is here to play s/ts only and that is why the numbers appear off. If we had 5 corners and 5 safeties and 2 safeties were st only it would not seem odd.

All true except option 1. Brandon was more tradeable than Butler will ever be yet BB didn't have patience to hold onto him until a trade was arranged. If he wanted to get rid of Butler, he would just cut him too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Dowling rotated in at the free safety position. The guy is versitle and can cover both slot and WR's.

I really can't wrap my brains around keeping Butler over Yeatman, or even Maneri. Ther upside on Butler is non-existent, as far as I can tell. I hope to God he surprises me and outperforms, but I expect to be screaming at the TV because of him instead....

    1. Nobody here knows the trade market for Meriweather. It was apparently nonexistent.
    2. Bill did not want Meriweather on his 53.
    3. Bill did not want Yeatman on his 53.
    4. Bill did not want Maneri on his 53.

And I don't remember where, but I read somewhere that speed is more important on kickoff coverage teams than it was before, because you need guys who can get downfield fast, as opposed to blowing up blockers. If Brown and Barrett are going to have more defensive duties than originally thought, it makes sense to carry an extra secondary player to play on special teams, and it seems to be that the extra DB is a CB.

A Butler trade also makes a lot of sense. They'll need a TE and more OL sometime.

Molden hasn't proved that he's CB depth.

Butler could implicitly move up the DB depth chart vs. JAG safeties if Arrington or Dowling winds up playing some safety.

6 Corners to deal with the proliferation of Spread offenses, sometimes these CB's will be filling a role previously filled by a pure safety.

    Fair enough.

So, I guess I need another thread to discuss why we have 5 players who are here to play special teams instead of the more usual 2-3. Obviously, Barrett and Brown might have been considered special-teams only if Meriweather and Sanders were still here. My point is that we have lots of top special teams players, including almost all the position defensive backs. It is not clear why we need 5 special-teams only players.

BB also has talked about keeping the best players. We fans I think put more stock into how many OLinesmen and how many ILBs and how many WRs than BB does.

It could be as simple as him keeping the players he thought gave the team the best chance to win :D

    #24 Jersey

I think this question is a more relevant one, but then again, it's still very early so I would expect (without a doubt) any moves to be made from one of the last 3 names on this list. That may happen this week or next.

As far as the 6 CB question goes, I think we were all expecting 5, so the extra one to me is not that big of a deal.

If you view Tarpinian as a place-holder for Morris, then you're down to worrying about the excess of speed-position STers.

Because Troy Brown, and Earthwind Moreland were unavailable. Otherwise, it would be 8 corners :D

(ok, so that was funnier in my head)

There have been a lot of assumptions about efforts at a Meriweather trade, but in reality no one knows what happened behind closed doors..

Back to the topic at hand, Dowling had minimal TC and preseason experience, do we reallly do not know what we have here...

Bodden had minimal TC and Preseason experience as well due to an injury, so we do not know what we have here also..

I suspect that Alge is on the shadow roster, and if and when a slot opens he might get a call... BB may have preferred Yeatman close at hand, but stuff happens..
