For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth let us get a grip and try to remember one of the things that Bill Belichick is great at is not paying for what a player has done in the past but for what he'll do in the future. He has been a master at getting rid of a player at just the right moment. This is why the New England Patriots have been in contention for over a decade and will continue to do so. He doesnt listen to the fans. Good.

My my how different the 1st Giant SB game would have been with a FG from Adam Vinatieri instead of a 4th down incompletion in Giant territory because the HC had ZERO confidence in his FG kicker Stephen Gostkowski and never tried for those extremely valuable 3 points.

Ty Law had a couple of pretty darn good years after leaving. (weakness the team has never solved)

Asante Samuel has played pretty darn well since leaving. (weakness the team has never solved)

And how about the flip side???

Horrendous track record of FA signings.

    Keep sippin' dat kool-aid.

So, Vinatieri outplayed Gostkowski this year?

Must be on kicking %, right?? Oh wait. No. Vinatieri was 26 of 33 compared to Gostkowski's 29 of 35.

So, you must be talking about kick-offs then, right? Nope. That can't be it because Vinatieri doesn't kick off anymore and hasn't for 4 years.

    Guess you were wrong..

Overall, he has been a disappointment after he left the Pats. Last year was a revival year for him. Here are some guys you can argue did as good or better:

Darius Butler (he bounced around a bit, but became a fairly good player in Indy)
Ben Watson - Had a great year in his first year in Cleveland. Been as good or better in Cleveland has he has been here overall which is average to slightly above average.
BJGE - Still think he is a marginal starter, but did have over 1,000 yards last year.

    Seymour hasn't been that good.
Law had 1 good year after the Pats.
Spires played well for several years.

Samuel was so good that he was run out of Philly..

Oh please. The Patriots have not been worse off at the kicker position because Vinatieri left and Samuel hasnt been such a huge loss either. The Patriots have put together a run only matched in NFL history by the Lombardi Packers, 70's Steelers, the 18 year 49ers run, and the 65 to 85 Cowboys and Raiders. Belichick hasnt gotten rid of anyone too soon

Seymour became the highest paid defender in the NFL at $15M a year. Samuel was on the trade block three straight offseasons starting after his second year with the Eagles.

I'd say Belichick has hit on a lot more of these types of situations than he's missed.

Maybe in a few years. Difficult to have much confidence in the proposition that Amendola outperforms Wes next year. If not, Patriots got worse next year and saved essentially no money.

The only comparison that can be made is the players that left vs what the freed up money did for the team.

I don't think that ... a comparison of last years offense numbers to this years will be the judge. Even then there's no way of knowing what Welker would have done this year on the team that is being constructed. I think we'll be okay ...

Who has Belichick let go who accomplished a lot for the duration of the contract they were seeking?

    NO ONE !! (so far)

Playing well for a few games or one year was not worth the Patriots resigning any of the free agents that went to the wall against the team. There has been no Vrabels or Harrisons or Ted Washington's etc i.e. Players that had INCREASED VALUE over the life of their contracts after leaving a team - never mind EQUAL VALUE.
