I think, no, I know, "oriental" is an offensive term to people of Asian descent.

Are you sure? Japanese, Chinese, and Indian people would all be Asians, but I don't think an Indian would be considered Oriental. Am I wrong?

The term (oriental) has been used by westerners to describe people from the eastern cultures. It would include Indians, and it is perjorative.

Sorry for ruining this enlightened thread by pointing out the probably unintended use of a racial slur. Should I have let slide if he called Beyonce a "coon"?

Given that Oriental is not a racial slur, you should have just ignored it.

Oriental, like Indian, is simply a name given to people who live in an area of the world. It is neutral. The fact that some of the people described by the term get offended does not make the word itself a slur. The same is true of the use of the word "black" to describe "black" people.

Has anyone seen "Clerks II?" This reminds me of the "porch monkey" scene.

It's considered a slur in most places. If you didn't know, that's cool, now you do. Definitely not something to say in casual conversation in most locales, and certainly not on a messageboard with a large demographic.

It's not unforgiveable that someone might not know this. I've been/lived places in the south where it's still used in common areas. But it's definitely not the thing to do.

EDIT: Now my wife disagrees with me. She says the intent has everything to do with whether it's a slur or not. And that might be another take on it. I think we need a global ruling on this word now. LOL

    ^True

I don't know if this guy who complained is Asian or not but this is getting a little out of hand. I own my own home and have always used the term Oriental including to Asians and have never once heard anyone complain about it until now. Just chill out and let this thread go back to the topic.

lol... what does that even mean?

It is such an unoffensive borderline term that people use every day that it is just ridiculous to go out of your way to bring it up. I've heard my professors (educated with PhDs) use this term countless times this year. It is nowhere near some other offensive terms. And another thing, wtf do you want us to call these people now?! This political correctness bullsh*t has just gone too far.

Here are the alternatives, and the subsequent b*tching that goes with them:

Chinese - possibly not Chinese, offended... same goes for Japanese, Vietnamese, etc., so you probably shouldn't take a guess on it

Asian - Not specific at all, Asia is massive, Russia is in Asia, India is in Asia, that term doesn't narrow down the interpretation wanted at all

And I obviously don't want to say some other definitely derogative alternatives... so tell me, what the **** do we say now?!

I own my own business, and I've dated several Oriental women throughout the course of my lifetime. so I guess using the term hasn't been that devastating to me. Now, as captain of the "P.C. for no reason" crew, would you care to cast any more aspersions my way, or is the one you just used above enough hypocrisy for you to display in one evening?

    This is brilliant.

I wonder if we're seeing the evolution of our language here. Maybe this is how words start to fade out.

Like RobAllan said, it is offensive to people of Asian descent. Period. And it makes you sound uneducated. I'm sorry, but it does. Asian is to Oriental as Black is to Negro - both quaint colonialisms that have no place in modern society. Of course, keep using both if you wish. I just thought a public message board was the wrong place for it, that's all.

Actually it's a unique term. Oriental is a term used to describe the place and "things" or "objects" from the Orient, not people. It's not the same as Black v. African-American which is really just a PC thing. People might have used "Oriental" to describe Asians in their own home but say this in front of an Asian person and I guarantee you won't get a good reaction. The word "Oriental" itself is not a slur but its deliberate misapplication by westerners towards Asian people makes it a slur. It also harkens back to a sensitive time period of internment and Western occupation of many Asian countries. It's closer to the term "Negro" v. "Black" than "Black" v. "African-American." Taken in isolation the term "negro" is not a slur but nothing is used in isolation; the broader historical context of words often shapes their place in the public psyche and "Oriental" doesn't have a very nice historical association.

This is what's known as "nonsense", as my Oriental friends can attest to. However, I'll tell all the Oriental furniture stores (often run by Orientals, I might add), the Ramen noodle companies, like Nissin, who have "Oriental" as one flavors, and everyone else I see associated with this term that Letekro and Wildo7 have ruled and the word is now forbidden.
