Obama Staff Arrives to White House Stuck in Dark Ages of Technology - washingtonpost.com

"It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said of his new digs.

One member of the White House new-media team came to work on Tuesday, right after the swearing-in ceremony, only to discover that it was impossible to know which programs could be updated, or even which computers could be used for which purposes. The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos.

But there were no missing letters from the computer keyboards, as Bush officials had complained of during their transition in 2001. "

Probably to help in circumventing the Presidential records-keeping laws.

Same thing happened to Bush ... most of it has to do with security and the save all the info policies ... Obama must be pulling what hair he has left right out.

It must be a nightmare, especially considering Obama's team made such use of the internet during the campaign. One aide had to route his cell calls to his wife's phone LOL.

I know it's to do with security but considering Obama's approach to communication I can just imagine the chaos:eek:

It sounds like they're working around a few things, but the software is like 6 years old. Considering it's the White House I thought the outdatedness of their equipment seemed unusual.

More laptops and flatscreen televisons in the White House. Change you can believe in. ;) And what's wrong with six year old versions of Microsoft? XP Professional blows away any version of Vista any day of the week!

This is insane. Every computer on base here is a year old at most (the DoD agrees with Kontra on the XP/Vista debate).

Whoever was Bush's tech guy should be fired! Wait a second...

Read the same article and thought that this was surprising... particularly in this day and age.

I've got two comps at home, and bunch networked here at the office. One of my home PC's, my newest, came with Vista. XP totally blows it away. XP is not without it's problems, but Vista has more problems than it's worth. Eventually they'll get it up to speed, but I refuse to upgrade from XP until it's improved.

As for the gubmit, who knows. Is this a "W's" from the key board deal where you talk down the outgoing admin to make yourself look better? Maybe it's a situation where an admin that came in in 2001, simply stuck to the systems it was familiar with. Or it could be just as it says, they were a lifetime behind technologically. I honestly couldn't tell ya.

I work in the computer networking field right now and, supposedly, Microsoft has released an improved version of Vista without the bugs. I'm not sure how valid that statement is though since I won't touch Vista with a ten foot pole attached to another ten foot pole.

I've heard negative things about Vista too.

I just had NO idea their tech was so dated; I'm not sure exactly what I'd imagined they had for computer systems etc,I never really thought about it, but I never thought it was so behind as to warrant something in the Post lol.

Now that we know about it and actually consider it, the situation is sort of interesting. Maybe it's only a big deal because of the Obama team's affinity for using the net as a tool more so than previous presidents, who knows. Just one of those interesting little tidbits about the WH.

The 9/11 Commission had discovered that the FBI's computers were also in the dark ages. I'm wondering if they have been updated since that finding.

This is an infamous problem that I'm pretty sure has been a public issue for more than a decade.

With respect to the White House, it should have a permanent IT staff.

Most corps use Win XP and have not migrated to Vista. What would Vista allow them to do that XP doesn't?

Going to Mac would be a change. OSX wasn't a viable corp OS 8 years ago.

    Silly story.

Yeah that's messed up ... i have Vista but XP seemed more user friendly.
Conspiracy people say Vista was made to make spying on us easier ... oh I need to get off those sites.
