Who do you think should qualify for a player(s) that must prove in 2009 that they show signs that are worthy of wearing silver, red and blue and good enough to play years ahead for the Patriots?

    On my list are ...

Laurence Maroney (probably on most lists)

Chris Hanson (O.K. but far from a lock for the future)

Ellis Hobbs (suddenly he has some serious competition at CB)

Ben Watson (Dropping critical passes too often and needs to show he is better or as good as Chris Baker and a still raw David Thomas)

    Any others to consider?

(NO Brady,Moss or Welker allowed for those potential smartass answers please :))

I think you pretty much nailed it. However, Chris Hanson didn't come to mind because punters come and go.

Anyone in a contract year has something to prove. With 31 players in a contract year we could see some serious motivation.

Thomas and Watson are both in prove-it years. Maroney, if he disappoints this year, may find himself out of the league altogether. I think Pierre Woods has to prove that he's something more than a special teamer this year too.

Can't agree with Thomas - Year 1 was lost with injury and last year Cassel and him just did not click

With Brady this season I would think we will see improvement,I would still give Thomas till the end of the 2010 season to show us those hands of steel and glue that he had at the U of Texas

Watson on the other hand has been in the league longer, obviously has been on the field more than Thomas and yet has shown little since 2005 - IT IS time for OUR Big Ben to show his talent or leave

Of the people you just listed, I think only Ben Watson will be re-signed. And even that is far from certain. We will need the money to throw at Wilfork and potentially either Seymour or Peppers, depending on how things play out.

Laurence Maroney gets my pick. Also, Ben Watson needs to show something.

Um, he's no longer on the roster.

Thats McDaniel's problem to deal with now

I could see Maroney as well being in Denver next year if he sucks for another year here.

Funny you say that. Denver always had a way of churning out 1,000 yard rushers under Shanahan. It would be interesting to see if the same would hold true under McDaniel, though I heavily doubt that considering his program in NE.

As it appears right now,Maroney probably would need 2 seasons to get to the 1,000 yards plateau,In NE,Denver or elsewhere - Maybe 3 seasons if he breaks or twists any more glass ;)

Maroney for sure. He doesn’t even need to have a great season. Just a solid one. We have Taylor in there as well and we need them to be a combo.

Watson took a step backwards last season in my mind. Needs to step it up big time.

Hanson. First name that popped in my head to be honest. He was beyond terrible in the early stages of the 2008 season. He finished strong but the first half of the year is still blaring in my mind.

Morris/Taylor to me would be a deadlier combo than Maroney/Taylor but thats just me,I am not a believer of Maroney turning the corner and becoming the runner we thought he would be as a #1 in 2006- I hope he really does but I am not convinced he will,I think he is sporadically good at best.

    Disable Jersey

Too many to list. Besides the obvious name players it's DEFINITELY prove it for Rudd, Redd, Crable, Ventrone, Le Kevin Smith, Alexander, Hochstein, LaVoie and too numerous to mention other players on the fringe. I'm giving last years 2 W CBs a pass, since rarely do we cut someone drafted that high quickly and they seem decent enough not to buck the trend. And unless there's another fiasco of Chad Jackson proportions, the Pats will add at the very least 4 very strong rookies who will displace someone on the 53.

I am one of those rare Hochstein fans - I love the fact that he is so versatile and can play any position on the line and does not do a bad job at that, not to mention he makes for a solid goaline fullback

You have to give players on the bubble to those who have been on the field and the league for several years or at least those who have not had consecutive years of injury - so in that regards,Redd,Rudd,Crable would not count IMO

Le Kevin Smith is a good choice to be close to saying bye bye as well as Alexander

    Right... my list

I think you nailed it with Maroney.

    Watson too.

I personally believe Ellis Hobbs has already proved it, but I am in a HUGE minority there.

Maybe James Sanders. Rodney will likely be gone, so it will be a big year for him to see if he can step up and really become a leader.

In terms of recent acquisitions, Leigh Bodden and Greg Lewis come to mind.

On the offensive line, I think Logan Mankins must prove he is at his 2007 level to get a nice new contract.

I would put Kaczur on the list before Mankins, even light can't handle most elite pass rushers so he is not exactly a lock himself.

I'm thinking this Brady kid really needs to show us something or it is time to cut ties with the bum.

But seriously, I agree that anyone in a contract year. I think it is a make or break year for Maroney.

What the hell? Mankins is the best player on the line.

As to Maroney, hes been very good, he just hasn't been on the field. That, and hes still cheaper to keep than let go. Hes not going anywhere.

    Maroney of course.

If he doesn't make it in football, perhaps Maroney can do dancing with the stars.

There are to my mind a number that must...
Maroney...Must show he's is less fragile and can split time with an inside back...a Maroney/Morris/Taylor combo would really be bnice to have.
Watson and Thomas...Ben has not been that big time receiver and a threat.Wya too many dropped balls. Thomas was suppose to be a go to guy, but has only shown flashes. Much more consistenncy.
Kaczur...He's going to have to step it up as they will have others competing for his spot on the right side.
Green...He can be dominant at times rushing an dmake the key plays, but had an off season last year. Will be interesting to see how he does this year..better or a step downward.
LSmith...He's just stepping up and getting playing time, but being the 6th in a tough grouping means he either has to take a big step up or be in heavy competition.
Guyton, Redd, Woods, Alexander, Crable and Ruud. Out of these six, a few need to step up and show that they can be starters. Redd has a lot of potential and might be a year or two from that. With him, if he progresses a lot he will stay. Guyton ight be a tweener, so he'll need to establish which LB position is best for him and to improve. Crable needs to stay
healthy and show that he can develop...same as Redd. Ruud needs to show something on Special Teams. Alexander might show that he can be a backup ILB, but if not, he'll need to be a top special teams player. Woods needs to step up to possibly a starter and/or continue to be a top Specail teams player.
Richardson needs to battle last years rookies and stay ahead of them and to play some solid special teams.
TWilliams needs to stay healthy and play that tough safety/linebacker like he started to in training camp.
I am sure there are other fringe players that must step up..but I thought I would mention a few of the important ones.
