How much cap space ... easy ... not enough.

If Iam reading the chart right we should be almost 25mil under the cap.... which seems like alot

Re: Whats the Pats projected cap space for 2009?

I really need to emphasize this point better om that page. That $25 million is as September 9. Things will change between now and the advent of free agency.

1.) Tenders will be made to the teams' ERFAs and RFAs.
2.) The practice squad players will be signed to 2009 contracts.
3.) Some 2009 salaries will be increased through escalators.

Miguel,
Am I reading it correctly to assume that the amount of dead money is less than in past years and at under $1 million seems pretty good relative to the league as a whole???

Anybody know?

Hopefully enough to sign two VERY large VERY good O-Lineman and at LEAST 1 quality CB.

Given the imploding market value of very large very good OL and CB, don't hold your breath for that level/method of projected immediate upgrade here. It's going to have to come via draft or incremental trade. I think/fear we are going to have to flip someone eventually who will bring us replacement draft value ++. I thought we were positioned to do that with Asante. I still wish we had.

In reality our dead money is around $13 million. $12 million towards a guy who went on IR during the first quarter of the first game.

No, because that counted in 2008, not 2009...

Remember, that too would be pending 2009 partings which we won't know about until/unless the team decides to announce some.

Re: Whats the Pats projected cap space for 2009?

Looking at that list, there will be some tough decisions to make next off-season - based of course on what happens over the rest of the year. Do the Pats extend these players, and if so, at what price?

Unrestricted Free Agents include: Jabar Gafney, Rodney Harrison and Deltha O'Neal.

Players in the final year of their contract in 2009 include:
Tedy Bruschi at $2.6 mil
Kevin Faulk at $4 mil
Jarvis Green at $3.5 mil
Ellis Hobbs at $710k
Logan Mankins at $1.5 mil
Stephen Neal at $3.4 mil
Richard Seymour at $9.8 mil
Mike Vrabel at $4.4 mil
Vince Wilfork at just $1.4 mil

And then looking further ahead, Tom Brady, Matt Light, Laurence Maroney and Randy Moss will all be in the final year of their contracts in 2010.

Exactly, there are a lot of contracts ending in the next year or two. There won't be much room for FA if we want to keep current players.

That's not at all clear. Remember: at the moment, it's "Sayonara, salary cap" in 2010. That's not to say I see the Pats turning into the football equivalent of the Yankees, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if their total payroll was in the top 8 in such a scenario.

But at least they are not starting out behind the 8 ball with $4-5 million in dead space ala Dillon as in past years....

Resign:
Jabar, O'Neal, Hobbs, Mankins, Wilfork, Vrabel. Wilfork is key.

Let go or sign only at below what they ask:
Everyone else
