I expect that when the 49ers and the Patriots play this year Thomas Brady Sr. will be rooting for New England, and not the his home team 49ers that he use to take young Tommy to so they could root for the 49ers and the the great Joe Montana.

However, I am sure that some of Tom's high school friends will be rooting for the team that they have been rooting for since childhood friendship be damned.

I am sure anyone of us would don an outfit of aqua and orange or wear a horseshoe logo if our own son was drafted by a rival team. But would you do it for a brother? a cousin? a friend? classmate? a brother-in-law?

Is anybody here a Pats fan because of a relationship that didn't start out a Pats fan?

I was a Browns fan (grew up in Cleveland) before they moved. Pats were my second team back then as my wife was a Pats fan. So it was an easy move for me as my team was gone.

I have no expectation to ever find another team but if your team was sold to an owner who was a dumbass I see nothing wrong with finding a team more worthy of rooting for. Why root for crap ? Anyway, the Patriots fans won't be in this situation with Jonathon there for when Robert can no longer run the team.

I grew up outside Boston but moved to Philly nearly 25 years ago... When the locals ask if I'm an Eagles fan, my response is the same. I ask them that if they moved to Dallas or NYC would they become a cowboy or Giant fan? They look at me with a pained look and reply "of course not" Then they understand why I'm a Pats fan.
My kids have become Boston sports fans because.......it's Philly, need I say more? Put another way, today is the 25th anniversary of the last Philly championship.............

I am not really talking about moving. Very few people switch teams because they move to a new city.

More a long the lines of lets say your nephew was drafted by Jets, or your daughter's boyfriend was signed with the Colts, or your son's best friend was the starting QB for the Bills.

I grew up in the Midwest a diehard Bears fan. I still have a soft spot for the Bears, but don't care much for Lovie Smith. I moved to Mass. in '88. Finally when Tuna came onboard, I got season tickets and now bleed blue and silver. The transformation didn't take long.

It'll never happen. Even if they moved and changed names i would still follow the team since i don't live on the East Coast anyways.

If Tom Brady finished his career on another team, that would be my 2nd favorite team... unless it was the Jets or Colts.

or Bears or Dolphins or Broncos or Chargers or Steelers or Titans

I am still a Knicks fan. If the past five years has not amde me stop cheering for them, I highly doubt anything the Pats did would make me choose another team.

    Disable Jersey

If I happened to be passing by Mt. Sinai, and a burning bush that was not being consumed by its flames started talking to me and commanded me to switch team alliance, I'd look around for ventriloquists and tape machines. If none of those were around, I'd do as that voice commanded.

Short of that, nothing springs to mind.

My first reaction was "my death...if you believe in reincarnation. Then I thought about it. How close a cousin? I have many cousins in the Philly area that I've never met. If a cousin I never met plays for, say KC, who cares. If a kid of a friend is drafted by, say, the Jets I'll be rooting for a trade and be very respectful of him during Jets games, but I'd still be quietly rooting for the Patriots even if I don't wear Patriots stuff to his house.

My brother is in Seattle, but if my nephew started playing for the Jets, well, see above.

My sister's kids I know. I might become a Jet fan then, but root for a trade.:)

For my daughter and my niece if they married a Jet player, see above.

Oh, this is for player/coach only. If they become a Costanza-Yankee-like who cares?

I was a LA Raider and LA Rams fan back in 1994. It took them moving for me to give up my alliance with them. My brother and I put all the TEAMS in a hat, except the Raiders and Rams and drew. I picked up NE and he picked up "Goober's Team". I have been a Happy NE fan for the last 14 years and even if Los Angeles some how by a miracle got a team I would not switch. It is an awesome feeling being the only NE fan in my family and friends. They hate me every Sunday. They talk so much trash and every Sunday they shut up when we win.

What would it take? How about hell suddenly freezing over.

I was raised in a house full of Seahawk fans. They tried to brainwash me as a child by buying me Seahawk gear, but one Christmas when I was probably 5 or 6 years old, my mom bought me a NFL bedspread with all the teams' logos on it. I asked, "What team is that with the guy hiking the football?" The rest is history. I chose the Patriots because none else was rooting for them and even at that young age, I was going against the grain.

If I had a son or grandson the caliber of Tom Brady and he played for San Francisco.. would have to be fans of both, and as hard as it would be might have to switch and become a SF fan..

But as my son is a chef and my grandson wants to be a mechanic, looks like no, not, never will I ever have to face this situation.. my wife is a Pats fan, most of my friends are so will die bleeding these colors.

    The opposite for me.

I moved from Philly to Boston in 1987. I rooted for the Philly teams as long as I could but when I no longer recognized any of the names in the box score things changed. I still root for the Philly teams against anybody else (except Boston) but I would say now I am a Boston fan. It also helps that I respect the organizations in New England and the way they are run.

If my son became a player, I'd root for him no matter what, but every other day of the year I'm a Pats fan. If his team plays the pats, I probably don't watch or watch and can't help but root for my kid. Other than that, I root for the pats every weekend and I root for him every weekend as long as there isn't a conflict of interest. Head to head, I don't know how you don't root for your kid. Of course, best possible scenario is my kid gets drafted by the Pats. Or that could also be worst possible scenario if they suck while he's there. Damn, good question, thankfully the wife and I have no kids yet, so this decision is a LONG way in the future. Other than my own kid, screw the relatives, they could get drafted by anyone, wouldn't keep me from being a Pats fan.

If the Patriots went really badly downhill -- say they were bought by some shady type with no ethics and were full of wife-beaters and drunken drivers -- then I would lose enthusiasm but not switch (that has happened to me with soccer). If they were sold and moved and got renamed, I would be a fan without a team.

I guess I'm just a one man dog.

I was born and raised a Pats fan. Have been one for over 40 years and have stuck with them thru some pretty hard times.

I don't think I could switch allegiances now if I wanted to.

The only scenario I could see swaying me even remotely, is if my son were to be drafted by another team. I would definately root for his team to do well, just not against the Pats. Of course I'd want to see him have a great game though.....

The only way I could ever switch alliances would be if a member of my immediate family played for a different team. Even then, the switch would be 100% temporary. That applies to the Pats, Sox, and Celtics.

I did not think of them moving. I would not have been a fan of the St. Louis Patriots. If, say the Krafts were hit by an asteroid and a third cousin in LA inherited them and moved them, I eventually stop being a fan of the LA Patriots. (It takes a while as players retire, etc.)

I also grew up near Cleveland, in the Paul Brown days. But I left Ohio when I was 18 and lived in Chicago and New York afterwards, never becoming a Bears or Giant or Jets fan.

After 30 years of living in New England, I started getting interested in the Patriots just before the Drew Bledsoe era. I soon became as much of a fanatic as I was in my Cleveland days, where a loss could send me into a week's depression. Fortunately, losses were, as they are now, very infrequent.
