This was pretty brutal tonight. It's so bad it's gonna lock up the red zone channel come season time. (Sorry, we have no games available right now because all games are under review for pass interference on the defense. We will commence shortly. In the meantime here is a Peyton Manning commercial while you wait. Brought to you by the arena football league.)

Add "In season games called like tonite's" to my list

In all fairness BB had asked for the refs to call everything per the new points of emphasis
Now, did he do this to teach his players?
Or to create a huge fan outcry?

And finally, there were lots of pre-season normal stupid REAL infractions tonite as well

Pats game had 21 accepted penalties. Just heard on ESPN that saints game had 32 penalties!!!! Jeff Saturday said makes games hard to watch. Good every analyst should be saying this to get the NFL to change things before it's too late

Like another member posted earlier. I hope this is just a tutorial for the players and not the red line. Someone had mentioned that BB and Kelly wanted a lot of calls to emphasize the rules to the younger players. That's fine but when I hear there are even more penalties at the Saints game I worry. Hopefully Peyton was along the same lines at Ne/Phi coaches philosophy.

The boos will be off the charts in week 1 if this continues. I expect the Foxboro faithful as well as every other fan base to be heard loud and clear if this crap don't stop. Safety is one thing and I think every fan can get on board with that but this is something completely different. More offense? How much more offense do you need. Get #%^*{} Goodell.

    This is ridiculous.

Couldn't believe one of them called out Peyton Manning regarding all the penalties towards the end of the game. Specifically the 05 playoff loss against the Pats and The Seahawks win this year. Big time kudos whoever was brave enough to do that on live tv. Anyone know which one it was?

That was Andy Hart and, surprise, surprise, that is when the NFL network started showing the Seahawk game instead.

I feel like they want to turn the game into a perpetual episode of the 2010 Packers vrs the 2010 Packers, or the 2011/12 Patriots vrs the 2011/12 Patriots. Glass cannon v Glass cannon, with defenses having to stop the bleeding via turn over or holding a team to a field goal.

After a few seasons I think a lot of football fans would eventually find this unwatchable.

What's worse is the media will always pretend it isn't a completely different game, so in the future, when some rule-protected JAG is throwing, say, 55 or 56 touchdowns, the talking heads will be making ridiculous comparisons to QB's long gone from the game, who played a different game entirely, against defenses allowed to prevent them from succeeding.

The 2013 NFL is inferior football to what it was a decade before, but it was still very much watchable football. All it takes is one rule to transform it into something else, though - a completely different sport wearing an NFL skin.

The more you limit what a football player can do, the more you make the NFL predictable and every game different degrees of the exact same.

It's a shame I didn't get to see Saturday's last appearance on ESPN.

NFL says strict illegal contact calls will continue | ProFootballTalk

Unwatchable games with obscenely unbalanced rules, and it's all for the money brought in because of the casual viewer and fantasy football.

Like baseball, basketball and hockey, they're selling out the core fans in the quest for more revenue.

I love this part of this story:
The reason those calls are asking why something isn't a penalty is because you see a sequence like in the Patriots game on Friday where a receiver is barely touched and it's flagged. Then a few plays later a WR and CB are running 30 yards downfield and there's lots of contact with no flag. So the question becomes, "why isn't that a penalty?" Nobody want MORE penalties, Dean, they want to know why your employees aren't being consistent.

Your point is almost undoubtedly correct. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the narrative, and thus it will not be mentioned. Like the misleading press releases claiming fans want a bigger playoff field or longer season, the NFL will just keep lying as it attempts to have its way and make its money. Not one penny is to be allowed to escape.
