You don't keep a backup to win you the Super Bowl. You keep a backup to keep you afloat if your starter gets injured for a game, or a stretch of games.

both brady and dilfer started the season as backups when they won the superbowl.

hoyers biggest asset is his ability to emulate during practice. nobody's goign to be giving the pats anything for him anyway. especially with mallett here. hoyer's existence is relevant until mallett gets to a certain point.

Hoyer will leave after this season to compete for a job elsewhere. The Patriots will be compensated a low round draft choice. I'll wish him well hopefully in the NFC.

He's an RFA, not a UFA, after this season.

I voted for the 2nd. I think they would consider 3rd but think they would have to belice it would be high to pull the trigger as a quality backup who knows the system us really valuable. Overall I don't see it happening.

Without OTA's, minicamps & a full off season in the film room there is no chance that Mallett will be ready to be the #2 QB. BB wouldn't take a #1 for Hoyer this year.

Whole premise of this thread is flawed cause it assumes Hoyer had value.

Premise Mallot shows great promise in the preseason. This obviously means Hoyer has had much playing time in the preseason games. At the end of the abbreviated training camp a rookie has proven that that he is better than an UDFA that has thrown as many int as TD in garbage time.

Hoyer will either remain on the team or be cut. Maybe a team that is late on the waiver wire will give a conditional 7th round pick. But thinking NEP will get more than that in trade is silly.

Umm . . . remember this?

The Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers have completed a trade that sends third-string Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst to Seattle for draft picks.

The Seahawks swapped the 40th pick in the second round with San Diego's 60th pick and also will send the Chargers a third-round pick in the 2011 draft.

. . .

Whitehurst, a restricted free agent with third-round compensation, has had only four NFL snaps and has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game.

We're keeping Hoyer. I just don't believe there's any interest in him.

What Brady and Dilfer did is meaningless for the comparison. You don't keep your backup because he's going to take you to the Super Bowl. You keep your backup to keep the team afloat in case your starter can't play. If they do more than that, it's gravy.

And Mallet is nothing right now.

Mallett is a 3rd round pick. Nothing is who is being signed today (UDFA).

the backup does as much as he can.......there's no set limitation as to what will be expected of him.......hoyer is the kind of guys who can ONLY get you through a few games. he lacks the arm to keep opponents from attacking the line of scrimmage. Mallett has exactly that arm.

what brady and dilfer did exactly what you said they should not do......not meaningless. it happens around 20% of the time.....going back further to hostetler and doug williams, jim plunkett....it happens enough times where it is certainly not meaningless......

just like the above mentioned QB above,

Yes, that trade was in March. With the expectation that the player would have all off season to learn the new teams play book and be a value as either a starting or backup QB to the team for game 1 of the regular season.

The proposed trade in this case would occur at the end of training camp when the team is trying to cut down to 53 and would result in a player that would not know the playbook.

Huge difference.

Patriots might be able to get a 3rd or 4th for Hoyer in trade TODAY. At the end of August he is worth as much as KOC was worth at the end of training camp -- a 7th round pick at best. And then mostly for intelligence purposes.

It's completely meaningless, and it happens nowhere near 20% of the time. Only one team wins the Super Bowl every year, and it's usually with their real starters. You're arguing a nonsensical point, particularly in the FA/Salary cap era.

However, if you can tell me who the next Hostetler/Williams/Plunkett is, I'll be glad to suggest the Patriots trade for him. In the meantime, the unknown that is Hoyer is no worse than the known that is a Mark Bulger, in my eyes.

And Dilfer, really?
