Ian's Daily Blog - After sitting through minicamp and OTA's, we'll be taking a look at each of the new guys over the next couple of weeks to see exactly what we've learned about each of them heading into Training Camp next month. Today we'll look back at what we've heard from reports on 1st Round Draft Pick Devin McCourty.

I like him a lot. I think BB made a VERY wise choice here.

I'm really excited to see him on the field this year. If I had to guess what production we'll see out of McCourty, I'd have to guess that he'll probably be competing for nickelback (or have won it) by the end of the season.

I really think that he will be a starting outside CB before this season is over. He brings more of a physical presence to the position than Butler, who IMHO would be more suited to cover slot type receivers. This isn't to diminish Butler, who I believe is a special athlete, but more reflective of a slightly different set of skills, which makes one more suited to play outside an one more suited to play in the slot.

Either way I'm sure BOTH will get a lot of the defensive snaps with the regular D/

Not sure what you've been watching, Ken, but Butler is a pretty solid tackler in his own right.

I think he starts out (by end of camp i mean) as the nickel and challlenges Butler to start.
I wold be very disappointed if we keep trotting Wilhite out there on 3rd down and McCourty can' beat him out.

And you need to be if your are covering slot receivers and being in short zones. This isn't about what Butler brings to the table, K. This is about the skills McCourtey has. I think he is better suited to the outsides, just as I think Butler is the best man to play against slot receivers.

I might not start out that way, but barring injuries, its the way I think it will end up.

Just remember that we all expected the same thing from Butler last year and he started out extremely raw. I'm not saying it won't happen. But, outside of injuries occuring in the secondary, it's unreasonable to expect a rookie to push out a seasoned veteran (no matter how undependable he might be) in the rotation right off the bat in Week 1. Let's see what he does in training camp and preseason with pads on first.

Actually Butler played a decent amount right from the start. He played half the snaps in week 2, and every one by week 6. His playing time was very similar early on to what it was later.

I would disagree that it is UNREASONBLE for a rookie first round corner to start out as the nickel (or even be in the rotation as you suggest) ...many of them start from day 1.
I think we take an overly cautious view of rookies on this board and I don't know why. BBs history is that his first round picks contribte A LOT as rookies. Saying its unreasonable to expect contributions week 1 Kontradicts history.

But, you are right, time will answer which prediction is a better one.

i think McCourty, will be a good dime or even nickel back i don't see him as a starter not because he is a rookie but because i don't think he is better then Darius Butler, and Leigh Bodden, so if dose two guys don't miss any games he will not start any time soon

what i want to see is what he brings to the KR and PR game

I'd be happy to get the next Ty Law even with the melodrama.

I don't usually make predictions (mostly because I don't know how to research the old threads to remind people when I'm right :D ), but IMHO McCourty will be end up being better than both.

    Disable Jersey

Well, to date, we've learned that he's a cornerback taken in the first round even though he can't shift his hips well in transition and will be a target for deep passes as a result.

Now, let's hope that we eventually learn that he's been able to overcome this liability even at the NFL level.

To date?????? Were you at the OTAs DI? How have we learned that? Did Andy Hart or Paul Parillo tell you, because then I would understand, since they are so expert in their analysis? Or was this one of the geniuses who scout the underwear olympics in Indy, you know the guys who determined that Jamarcus Russell and Vernon Ghouston were can't miss prospects.

Why don't we at least wait until we actually see the kid actually play against someone before you start labeling his deficiencies as if you actually know it for a FACT

McCourty is supposed to be a good press corner, too. I'm not sure how Butler grades out in that area. Anyone have an idea?
